SEBRING – Students at Sebring’s McKinley Jr./Sr. High School didn’t begin their second semester of the year in a typical classroom setting. Instead students engaged in a series of Winter Olympic-themed team building activities.

Wednesday’s second semester kick-off dovetails with how students began their year. Sebring students swapped the typical first day of school schedule for a day of team building activities, small group discussions, and mental health presentations centered around the theme of “Wreck It Ralph,” a movie that encourages students to value themselves and others.

The schedule of events for the day kicked off with a viewing of “Ralph Breaks the Internet” (a sequel to “Wreck it Ralph”) in which themes of facing adversity and engaging with the world set the tone for small group discussions. Students also participated in Winter Olympic themed activities as they competed for gold in their grade levels. Some activities included Oreo curling, snowball spoon walks, “scooter sledding” races, and paper plate speed skating competitions. The day culminated with brain games, a school-wide dodgeball tournament, and an awards ceremony.

The concept of the day’s events aims to ease students into the rhythm of a school schedule after prolonged breaks. The events were planned by teachers and administrators with the goal of energizing students to finish the school year strong.

Starting at $2.99/week.
