Spring Garden Workshop
Gardeners of all experience levels are invited to kick off the growing season at the 2026 Spring Garden Workshop, hosted by OSU Extension Mahoning County, on Saturday, April 25,from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The full-day workshop will be held at the Mahoning County Extension Office, 490 S. Broad St., Canfield. Designed to inspire and educate, the workshop features two keynote presentations, a variety of hands-on and informational breakout sessions, door prizes, and opportunities to connect with local gardening experts and Master Gardener Volunteers. Topics range from plant selection and soil health to sustainable landscaping practices and garden art. The morning keynote, “Easy Perennials and Annuals to Add Color to Your Landscape,” will be presented by Pam Bennett, Extension Educator and Master Gardener Volunteer Program Director. The afternoon keynote, “Top Trees and Shrubs for Northeast Ohio,” will be led by Paul Snyder, Operations Manager at Secrest Arboretum, highlighting resilient and regionally adapted woody plants. Attendees will select three breakout sessions from options including growing plants from seed, rain gardens, soil health, succulents, pruning basics, creating wildlife-friendly spaces, and creative garden art projects. A hot lunch, educational handouts, session proceedings, and an optional make-and-take item are included with registration. Registration is $45 per person and includes all sessions and materials. Plant, garden art sale
Gardeners and plant lovers are invited to dig into a unique community event this summer at the Bring One, Take One Plant & Garden Art Sale, hosted by OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Mahoning County. This popular event combines a plant exchange and garden art market offering something for both experienced gardeners and beginners alike. The event will take place Saturday, July 25, 2026, at the OSU Extension Mahoning County Office, 490 S. Broad St., Canfield. The plant and garden art sale will run 9 a.m. to noon, with the plant exchange beginning at 10 a.m. A highlight of the morning is the Bring One, Take One plant exchange, where participants can swap plants with fellow gardeners. Those who wish to participate may bring up to five healthy, weed-free, labeled plants such as perennials, shrubs, or houseplants. Plant drop-off and check-in runs 9 to 9:45 a.m. Participants will receive a ticket for each plant they bring and will use those tickets to select plants during the exchange, which begins at 10 a.m. Visitors can swap for a variety of plants sourced directly from Master Gardener Volunteer gardens and other participants, including bulbs, native plants, shrubs, perennials for sun and shade, terrariums, and houseplants. In addition to plants, attendees can browse unique indoor and outdoor garden art handcrafted by Master Gardener Volunteers. The sale is open to the public, and cash or check payments will be accepted for garden art purchases. Mount spring concert
The University of Mount Union Department of Performing Arts will present a Spring Concert featuring the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble on Wednesday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Brush Performance Hall in the Giese Center for the Performing Arts. The concert will feature works by Jaime Texidor, Frank Ticheli, Steven Reineke, Johann Strauss and others. The following local students will perform as part of the concert: Katrina Asano of Alliance, Camron Bodine of Salem, Wyatt Courtwright of Beloit, Hailey Dray of Minerva, Samantha Drysdale of Wellsville, Ina Fryfogle of Salem, Josiah Haas of Salem, Christian Mikol of Salem, Connor Powers of Alliance, Ricky Short of Salem and Gavin Szijj of Salem.
United Quilt Guild
United Quilt Guild will meet Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, South Broadway Avenue. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Reservation of $10 for 2026 Spring Tea is due at this meeting. The tea will be held on Saturday, April 18, at the West Branch Booster Hall, at noon (doors open at 11:30 p.m.). The men’s tie quilt workshop will be held Friday, April 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., also at the booster hall, and cost is $20. Lunch will be provided.
