Winona Ruritans recognized for 70 years of continuous service at their April meeting
WINONA – The Winona Ruritan Club held it’s annual Father, Daughter, Granddaughter, Great-Granddaughter dinner meeting April 28 at the Winona Friends Church.
President Rob Doyle Jr. called the meeting to order and welcomed all the guests and members to this event. He also introduced Dennis Imhoff, docent of the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center presenting entertainment for the evening.
Doyle Jr. asked everyone to rise and sing “America” and then to pledge allegiance to the American flag.
Homer Althouse gave the ‘Invocation’ for the meal and meeting.
The club dispensed with the monthly secretary and treasurer reports.
Secretary Elmer Lee Stamp called the roll of members who, when their name was called, introduced their guests for the evening. Twenty-one members answered in the affirmative and there were 41 guests for a total of 62 in attendance.
Each month the club members sing “Happy Birthday” to members born in the month. Only one member was born in April, Homer Althouse, who celebrated his 90th. There were four guests who admitted to having April birthdays: Sherry Althouse, Terry Pasco, Sarah McArthur and Angela Stoffer. Everyone joined in singing “Happy Birthday” to all of them.
The club then received a surprise visit from Ohio District National Representative David Wingett and also Ohio District Lt. Governor John Biery, who came with the sole purpose of presenting the club with a plaque from the national office recognizing the club’s 70th year of continuous service to the community and the many, many lives that the club has touched over the past decades.
Doyle Jr. commented that the club is still seeking ideas to celebrate Americas 250th Birthday this summer. One idea presented is to participate in the “America 250 Parade – Home Town Story” on Friday, July 3, at noon with a float hauling the club’s large sign boards with members riding along. More discussion to be held later.
Doyle Jr. reminded members to be thinking about how many guests they will be bringing to the annual Steak Fry/Chicken Fry on June 23. The will be presenting its Higher Education Scholarships to members of its Ruritan families that evening.
Doyle Jr. then re-introduced Imhoff who presented an informative show-n-tell plus slide show of the Birds of Northeast Ohio.
