EAST ROCHESTER — The West Township Memorial Association and the West Township trustees will honor the East Rochester Garden Club members at Quaker Ridge Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

The East Rochester Garden Club recently restored the Robert and Catherine Jones Hanna Monument. This unique monument includes a grove of trees, large marble stone surrounded by marble edge, garden and several family members buried nearby with family names such as Jones, Hole, Preston, Thomas and Chambers.

The Patriarch Robert Hanna was born in Ireland March 2, 1753 and came to America in 1763. He died in Carroll County, July 16, 1837. He was a Colonial Pioneer and Revolutionary Patriot, having served as member of the Secret Provincial Committee on the Constitutional Rights of the Colonies, which led to the First Continental Congress and the Declaration of Independence

The large area had overgrown in poison ivy and the marble edges needed reset. After much work, and assistance from others, the project was complete last fall. Additional work has been done at Quaker Ridge Cemetery such as trees trimmed, dead ones removed, plantings, and blacktopping the drive.

The cemetery is located at end of Lippincott Road, joining into Andora Road, at the very border of West and Augusta townships; 11925 Lippincott Road, East Rochester.

The land first housed the Friends meeting house and school in 1810. The first burial was in 1816, Nathan Pim, a Quaker school master. The Quaker school was one of the earliest schools in the area. The school and Quaker meeting house are long gone, but the picturesque historic cemetery that is still used for burials has taken on a renewed look.

Brief history of the Hannas and the Quaker settlement will be shared. All are welcome to attend.

The Quaker Ridge Cemetery is governed by the West Township trustees. It and Moultrie Chapel Cemetery are the two active burial cemeteries in West Township.

West Township trustees are Glenn Whiteleather, Elton Lowmiller, Ray Davis; Memorial Association officers are Shirley Whiteleather Fox, Jeff Haynam, Diana Richeson and Bill Ellis; East Rochester Garden Club president is Lori Haynam.

Starting at $2.99/week.
