Quakertown Super Kids to mark 20 years Saturday
SALEM — Quakertown Super Kids will be celebrating 20 years of soap box racing in Salem at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The derby will be held on Broadway Avenue, beginning in front of city hall.
The race is for special needs children. The children are the racers; they are helped out by Ghost Drivers who control the double seater cars. All cars have been built over the years by service and nonprofit organizations. It is free for participants; everything needed is provided by sponsors.
Each year, the winner of the double elimination heats go the National Super Kids Race. This race is held at Derby Downs in Akron. There are also two wildcard racers. The trip to Akron is completely funded.
This will be the last year for Race Director Janet Keene. She has been in charge of the race since it was brought to Salem for the 2006 celebrations. Taking over will be the team of Betty Brothers, and Brenda and David Halverstadt.
Spectators are encouraged to bring a chair and come out to cheer on the racers. It is free for all and there will be a concession stand on site.
