The American Soldier being brought to the area to honor veterans
SALEM — The Ohio District 6 VFW and the Salem Women’s Federation are partnering to bring the nationally acclaimed Broadway production of The America Soldier to the Mahoning, Columbiana, Stark, Trumbull and NW Pennsylvania areas as part of the America 250 Celebration, honoring all who have served our nation.
On July 25 at 7 p.m., this one-man Broadway play written and performed by Doug Taurel will be presented at Salem High School. The production has been performed at the Kennedy Center three times, Library of Congress twice, Off-Broadway the month of December in New York, and in 42 cities across the United States.
This production tells the story of the American soldier through 14 characters based on real people, actual letter, and true experiences spanning from the American Revolution to present day. The play captures the discipline, teamwork, and brotherhood of military service while also examining the internal struggles soldiers face when returning home. Audiences meet a Revolutionary War soldier freezing at Valley Forge, a WW11 veteran haunted by Iwo Jima, a grieving Vietnam-era mother, an Iraq veteran struggling to adjust to civilian life, a family coping with repeated deployments and many others. Together these stories present a moving tribute to sacrifice, service and survival.
Taurel recently played Joe Petito in the Lifetime TV Movie, The Gabby Petito Story. He worked opposite Thora Birch, who also directed the film. He has appeared in numerous television shows and movies, including The Affair, The Americans, Blue Bloods, Nurse Jackie, Mr. Robot, The Cobbler (Adam Sandler and Dustin Hoffman), and The Kindergarten Teacher (Maggie Gyllenhaal). He’s been nominated for an Innovative Theatre Award and recently earned Best Actor and was nominated for Best Director at the GI Film Festival for his TV series Landing Home which he wrote and starred in. It tells the story of a veteran learning how to adjust once out of the Military. Landing Home can be viewed on Amazon, Apple, VUDU, TUBI, and Google Play. The Library of Congress commissioned him to write and perform his second solo show, An American Soldier’s Journey Home.
Tickets can be purchased at Sandy Beaver Insurance in Lisbon, Ricky’s English Pub, Salem Computer, and Simply Scarves and Such in Salem, as well as on Eventbrite: The story of the American soldier – 250 years.
