Ora E. Anderson Conservation Fund accepting 2026 grant applications
NELSONVILLE, Ohio - The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO) is accepting applications for 2026 grants available through the Ora E. Anderson Conservation Fund for Appalachian Ohio. Public and nonprofit organizations, as well as groups working in fiscal sponsorships with a nonprofit or public organization, are eligible to apply for funding to support conservation across Appalachian Ohio's 32 counties. Emphasis is on conservation activities and programs in the areas of watershed restoration, sustainable forest practices, and promotion of the region's cultural and environmental history. Canfield Jr. Fair livestock project to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank
YOUNGSTOWN - The Canfield Fair Livestock Auction/Sale in the new Canfield Fair Event
Center, will benefit families in Mahoning, Columbiana and Trumbull counties. Individuals can bid online by downloading the Canfield Fair App “Canfield Fairgrounds” from the app store. Livestock available to purchase for donation to the Food Bank includes Market Beef, Hogs, Poultry-Broilers, Ducks, Turkeys, Goats and Lambs. The auction schedule is as follows: Thursday, Sept. 3, 5:30 p.m. Goat Milk Fudge, Market Rabbits, Market Goats, and 7 p.m. Market Lambs, Carcass Lambs, Market Hogs; Friday, Sept. 4, 5 p.m., Market Poulty (Broilers, Turkeys and Ducks), and 7 p.m. Market Beef. Livestock purchased to be donated to the food bank will be processed by Winona Frozen Foods and Lehman Poultry. Processing fees will be added to the purchase price (market beef will be $1.25 per pound, hogs will be $1.25 per pound, lambs and goats will be $225 each, broilers $14 pair, ducks $10 and turkeys $30. Award-winning director to share work in Alliance
Ben Patterson still views all of his subjects through the eyes of a kid from the Carnation City.
Whether he's taking a look at America's obesity epidemic with an activist-comedienne or embedded with the defense team for a rapper during a federal trial, the award-winning documentary director says he looks through the lens that came with his upbringing in Alliance.
"I'm that consummate fly on the wall when I walk into these diverse situations," said Patterson, who now splits his time between Brooklyn, New York, and Narrowsburg, a town in the Catskill Mountains. "I still have the perspective of a boy from Alliance with a strong curiosity of how the world works. That allows me to take those experiences and turn them into something that people can watch to get an understanding too."
The 1997 Alliance High School graduate will make a return home on Thursday, Aug. 27, when he will present "Documenting the Journey: Stories, Cuts, Conversations and Coming Attractions" at 7 p.m. on the Brush Hall stage inside the Giese Center for Performing Arts on the campus of the University of Mount Union.
The free Alliance Goes to the Movies event, sponsored by the Alliance Historical Society, is part of the city's America 250 festivities and is made possible by grants from Visit Canton/ArtsinStark and Ohio Goes to the Movies.
Patterson's presentation will be followed with a question-and-answer session.
West Branch FFA officer retreat
BELOIT - The West Branch FFA officer team traveled to Ohio's Amish Country in June for its annual officer retreat.
During the trip, officers participated in several team-building activities that helped them improve communication, problem-solving and teamwork. The officers also spent time reflecting on past FFA events and discussing ways to improve them in the future. They shared ideas, gave feedback and began planning for the upcoming school year.
The retreat gave the team a chance to get to know each other better while having fun and preparing to lead the chapter. The officers returned with new ideas and are excited to put their plans into action for another great year in the West Branch FFA Chapter.
