September and October events at Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center

EAST LIVERPOOL - The Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center has announced the following activities for September and October:

Saturday, Sept. 5 from 1 to 2 p.m. - Ohio School of Falconry. The Ohio School of Falconry will be set up in front yard of the Wildlife Education Center. Joe Dorian will demonstrate how the birds fly and capture their food and talk about each bird. Guests will be able to take pictures of the birds. At the end of the program, 10 names will be drawn from those attending the program (must be at least 9 years old to do this). Those people will be able to have one of the birds fly to their arm. This event was canceled in August due to storms.

Sunday, Sept. 6 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. - "Wetland Metaphores." Join Wildlife Center volunteer Mary Spooner any time during the afternoon for this hands-on activity and discover the importance of wetlands. A wetland serves many purposes and the volunteers will use common things to help discover the jobs performed by wetlands. Reach into the box, pull out an object, and determine how it represents a function of a wetland.

Sunday, Sept. 6 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. - Observing Nature Up Close. Join BCWEC volunteers as they show images of some small things people can fine in nature in the fall. Learn how microscopes work and examine interesting specimens.

Saturday, Sept. 12 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Wildlife Watchers 101. Bird Watching Basics: Habitats, Counts, Feeder Watches, and Tally Sheets. Join BCWEC volunteers Cheryl and Eileen in the classroom at the Wildlife Center to learn the ins and outs of birding and making bird-friendly habitats. This workshop, partially funded by a grant from ODNR, will focus on wildlife habits and observations. Participants will use the center's bird feeders to learn how to use binoculars and to identify common Ohio feeder birds by sight and by ear. They will also plant some native shrubs and trees to attract birds and other wildlife. Bring own binoculars or borrow one of the center's. Registration required by sending contact information to edraybardon@yahoo.com. Class size limited to 25. Suitable for age 10 and older.

Sunday Sept. 13 from 1 to 2 p.m. How Do Animals Prepare for Winter? Join BCWEC volunteer Dennis Imhoff under the pavilion and learn how different animals prepare for and survive the coming winter.

Saturday, Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Geology of Little Beaver Creek. Join Geologist and BCWEC volunteer Cheryl Mattevi under the pavilion as she explains how the rocks of the area formed, and how glaciers and streams carved the scenic valley. Pack a lunch and stay to see the center, or take a hike along the stream afterward to see the rocks first hand. Suitable for teens and adults.

Saturday, Sept. 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. – Geology Road Show Rock Hounds of all ages are invited to join geologist Cheryl Mattevi under the pavilion. Bring rocks, mineral, or fossil specimens to this open house geology time.

Sunday, Sept. 20 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. - Carolyn's Nature Craft -Tree Cookie Ornament. Join wildlife center volunteers under the pavilion to create a tree cookie ornament. Decorate it with a creative flair and take home a nature-inspired keepsake that's perfect for the holidays. Supplies provided for the first 25 participants.

Sunday, Sept. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. - SCAVENGER HUNT on Logan's Loop Trail. Children and their adults can take a short hike on Logan's Loop trail, located behind the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center, and try to find all the animals on the scavenger hunt list. When the hunt is completed, families will receive a booklet about the animals they found on the trail. Adults can pick up the scavenger hunt paper, a pencil, and a clip board at the desk. The hike is .6 miles long and has a couple steeper areas. Participants should wear sturdy shoes. This activity will be canceled in case of bad weather.

Saturday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Wildlife Education Center will be open extended hours for visitors. This is the final weekend the center will be open for the 2026 season.

Archery Knowledge - Saturday, Oct. 3 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Join Chip Hudson and other volunteers in the grassy area by the pavilion to learn how to shoot traditional bows - no crossbows or compounds. Participants will learn the basics of shooting without sights. Bows of various sizes will be available and is open to kids and adults. This is also Friends of Beaver Creek State Park Pioneer Days in the park.

Sunday, Oct. 4 from 1 to 5 p.m. The Wildlife Education Center will be open for visitors. This is the final day the center will be open for visitors for the 2026 season.

Sunday, Oct. 4 from 1 to 4 p.m. - Build a Bird Feeder. Children age 7 and older and their adults can join Wildlife Education Center volunteers under the pavilion and build a wooden bird feeder. All supplies are provided for the first 30 participants. Participants will have a sturdy bird feeder to take home.

Sunday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. - Drawing for the raffle items. Winners need not be present.

Saturday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. - Joint Event with Raptor Hallow. Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center will travel to Raptor Hallow, 2295 W. State St., Alliance. The Wildlife Center volunteers will be set up and doing a presentation on How Animals Prepare for Winter. They will have their turtles and two native snakes as well as some animal mounts and pelts. Raptor Hallow volunteers will be doing Free Flight demonstrations and talking about feathers and predators of North America. There is an fee to enter Raptor Hallow.
