U.S. Route 30 closure for pavement rehabilitation
Starting Sept. 21, U.S. Route 30 will close at the state Route 11/U.S. Route 30 interchange in West Point for 45 days.
The closure includes the section of U.S. Route 30 from state Route 45 to the state Route 11 northbound on- and off-ramps. Additionally, the ramp from state Route 11 to U.S. Route 30 and the eastbound U.S. Route 30 ramp will close as part of this phase of the project.
The detour is from state Route 11 to state Route 154 west, back to U.S. Route 30.
This work is the first of five phases of the project. Following this closure, the state Route 11 northbound ramps will close from U.S. Route 30; the date for this closure will be announced in advance. Additional sections of U.S. Route 30 will close in 2027. The estimated completion date of Oct. 31, 2027, reflects the completion of all the sections included with this project.
Good As New Shoppe women's clothing giveaway
The Good As New Shoppe will hold a free giveaway of women's clothing from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday. The shoppe is located at the Methodist Church, 210 S. Main St.
Mile Branch Grange Ham Loaf Dinner
Mile Branch Grange, 495 Knox School Road, Alliance, will hold a drive-thru ham loaf dinner from 5 to 6 p.m. or sold out Thursday, Sept. 10. The meal includes ham loaf, scalloped potatoes, green beans, cole slaw and brownie for $12, cash only. No preorders; all meals will be first-come, first-served.
141st Hawkins Reunion
The 141st Annual Hawkins Reunion is Sunday, Sept. 13, at Mirror Lake Pavilion, Firestone Park, Columbiana (formerly Duck Pond Pavilion). The Blessing and the serving of the food starts at 1:30 p.m. Bring a cover dish, place setting and drinks for your attendees.
Celebrate the 250th anniversary of the country by wearing red, white and blue and remembering the contributions that the Hawkins Family made in the making of the country. Robert Hawkins, born in England, lived in Maryland and had strong beliefs against England during the Revolutionary War. Robert was a Patriot. His four sons served in the Revolutionary War with one son losing his life at Valley Forge. His sons, Thomas, Robert, Richard and William Hawkins, helped free America from England. On Sunday the Hawkins Family will celebrate them.
All are welcome to the Hawkins Reunion. The Hawkins family came to Columbiana County during its formation. The Hawkins who attend the Hawkins Reunion come from several sons.
Spiders Really Need Our Love
The Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley will meet Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the Austintown Senior Center, 112 Westchester Drive. Social time will be at 6:30 p.m. with the presentation at 7 p.m. Pat Rydquist, a retired interpretive naturalist from Summit Metro Parks, will present the program Spiders Really Need Our Love. She honed her new passion under Dr. Rich Bradley, renowned spider specialist at the Ohio State University. She will share the lives and value of spiders in the hopes that others will appreciate their beauty and worth.
PERI Chapter 18 to meet
The Public Employee Retirees (P.E.R.I.) of Mahoning County Chapter 18 will meet Oct. 6 at Avion on the Water Banquet Center, 2177 Western Reserve Road at noon for a cost of $20. The guest speaker will be Attorney Steve Yacovone, Boardman Township trustee and assistant prosecutor in Columbiana County. He will discuss several topics, such as data centers in Ohio, property tax reform and the pros and cons of townships becoming cities.
Chapter 18 meets every other month to update OPERS retirees. PERI monitors legislation and fights to protect the pension benefits we earned. OPERS retirees and employees are encouraged to attend.

Play about 9/11 response to be presented in Minerva
In honor of the 25th Anniversary of the attacks of 9/11, a Global War on Terrorism veteran and a former first responder will present "The Guys" by Anne Nelson, Friday, Sept. 11, at 6 and 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. The play will be presented at Komoto Dragon Martial Arts, 125 N Market St, Minerva (the former Garee-Scotts across the street from the Roxy Theater). This location was chosen so the production could be done in the round with the audience seated on three sides of the performance area. Based on a true story, "The Guys" follows an editor, Joan, and a fire captain, Nick, navigating the emotional landscape of grief after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Minerva Area Chamber of Commerce, 203 N Market St., Minerva, or at the door. The play is being produced by The Roxy Players and America 250 – Minerva.
