LISBON - The Lisbon Ruritan Club is seeking volunteers to continue making apple fritters for the Johnny Appleseed Festival.
The club has been making and selling apple fritters at the festive since 1968.
In the early 1980s the club had approximately 50 members and prepared and cooked about 175 gallons of fritter batter, using seven fryers. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, it settled in with about 22 members and 120 gallons of batter and four fryers.
Over the past decade, as the members decreased in numbers and increased in age, the club has decreased its batter from 120 gallons down to 104 this year with about 15 members.
Despite having an energetic group, the club is in danger of having to quit making fritters due to the age and health of many of its members. The club is asking that anyone interested in joining the club or helping at the festival to contact any club member.
Chartered in 1952, the club is a service organization that serves the community with fellowship, goodwill and community service. Ruritan National is made up of local clubs in urban areas, small towns and rural communities.
The Lisbon Ruritans meet once a month and enjoy a meal together, talk business of the club, and try to have a speaker and entertainment every meeting. The club currently supports the Lisbon Fire Department, Lisbon Baseball/Softball Association, Columbiana Soil and Water Conservation District, Lisbon Banquet, Lisbon Methodist Church Food Pantry, First Christian Church, Lisbon Lions Club's Holiday Distribution, and the Lepper Library to name a few. The club gives two to three scholarships a year and serve the Lisbon Banquet once a year. It also does two fundraisers a year, and a gun raffle where the winner gets a rifle and a pistol.
