-- An officer on patrol at 2:20 a.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of South Broadway saw a male dumpster diving behind a closed business. He was told it's private property and he needs the permission of the property owner. He was sent on his way.
-- Suspicious activity was reported at 9:33 p.m. Tuesday in the 900 block of Franklin where two people outside near a residence kept waving flashlights around. Police found the people securing items in a vehicle they were moving.
-- Police handled three different reports Tuesday for alleged shoplifters at Walmart on East State, making arrests in all three cases for suspects not paying for items. Kurtis Materna, 40, of East Fifth Street, was charged with theft for stealing $153 worth of items at 8:25 p.m. At 4:27 p.m., Arys Betties, 23, of Prospect Street, was charged with theft for failing to scan items and placing them in a bag without paying for them. Spencer Hulett, 33, of state Route 344, was charged with theft for failing to scan $165 worth of items and leaving without paying for them. All three arrestees were taken to the Columbiana County jail.
-- Juveniles were reported moving in between oncoming traffic on Newgarden Avenue at 8:17 p.m. Tuesday, but were not found.
-- Kerri Steffel, 32, whose last known address was 913 Barclay Ave., was taken into custody on a warrant for failure to appear on a domestic violence charge after police responding to a dog at large call came across a domestic in the middle of Barclay at 6:48 p.m. Tuesday. A female had control of the dog at large on Ridgewood at 6:34 p.m. and the owner was located on Barclay and retrieved his dog. The male and female on Barclay had conflicting stories regarding the domestic issue, but police found an active warrant for the female from the Columbiana County Sheriff's Office. She was arrested for the warrant and turned over to a sheriff's deputy.
-- A 16-year-old Salem boy was cited for assured clear distance ahead after his northbound vehicle struck the rear of a another northbound vehicle driven by Haley Kastanek, 22, of Salem, who slowed to make a turn at 6:27 p.m. Tuesday on North Lincoln Avenue near Superior. The report said the juvenile was distracted by his stereo.
-- An officer was flagged down at 6:06 p.m. Tuesday on South Broadway for found property. The item was taken by police for safekeeping until the owner can be contacted.
-- Judson Edling, 34, of East Third Street, was charged with disorderly conduct and taken to jail after police responded to the police station lobby for a child custody dispute at 5:25 p.m. Tuesday. The male half began screaming at the female half in front of the juvenile, then demanded an officer. When officers came into the lobby, the male began screaming at them and became aggressive. He was taken outside where he continued to scream profanities after being warned several times before being taken into custody.
-- A man who was doing roofing work in the 800 block of North Ellsworth reported at 4:56 p.m. Tuesday that he left for half an hour and returned to find his ladder missing.
-- Suspicious activity was reported at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday for a white van in a drive in the 800 block of East Fourth Street. No violations were observed and the people dispersed.
-- Police at 2:33 p.m. Tuesday checked on the welfare of an elderly female in the 1300 block of South Lincoln Avenue after her family members could not make contact with her. She told officers she was fine and that her phone would not charge and she had not received calls. She was told to contact her family to let them know she's ok.
-- A dispute was reported at 1:47 p.m. Tuesday in the 300 block of Newgarden Avenue where a man said another male would not return his phone. The phone was returned to the man after police spoke to both parties.
-- Police were called at 1:38 p.m. Tuesday to South Lincoln Avenue near Aetna for an injured animal, finding a person holding a dog on a leash with an injury to its mouth. Police learned the dog had run into the street and was hit by a blue car. The humane officer arrived and picked up the dog, who's owner was unknown at that time. The dog was described as a small black multi-colored dog. The driver of the vehicle returned to the scene and said he was unable to stop or avoid hitting the dog when it ran out.
-- A woman from North Ellsworth reported at 11:08 a.m. Tuesday that she left her backpack sitting in the parking lot of a business in the 2300 block of East State Street. When she went to retrieve the backpack, it was gone.
-- An East Fourth Street resident reported at 9:33 a.m. Tuesday that he noticed the exhaust on his car hanging low and discovered it had been cut off.
-- A woman who had been in the 200 block of Vine Avenue reported at 8:29 a.m. Tuesday that someone keyed the passenger side of her car while it was parked there.
-- An officer at 7:21 a.m. Tuesday saw a large amount of black smoke in the area of Jennings Avenue and found the source at a local business burning debris. The fire department also responded.
PERRY TOWNSHIP
-- Two dogs were reported running at large on Andrew Avenue at 9:58 p.m. Tuesday, but were not found.
-- Yelling was reported at 8:32 p.m. Tuesday in the 1200 block of Jones Drive where an unknown male caller alleged a female had a knife in the garage. Officers found the female in the driveway with no weapon. She said she kicked her male friend out of the residence and he said he was waiting for a ride. He told police she was losing it and waving a curved knife around, which she denied and said she wasn't going to harm herself. Police remained until the male's ride picked him up. The female became upset when Salem Police arrived and locked herself in the residence.
-- A neighbor dispute over parking was reported at 1:03 a.m. Tuesday in the 1100 block of West Perry where officers spoke with a woman and her grandson about the parking issue with the neighbor. They were told to contact the landlord.
-- Kathleen Johnson, 71, of Salem, was cited for failure to yield after traveling west on the bypass and failing to see the traffic light, entering the intersection and striking a northbound vehicle on Depot Road driven by Kathie Johns, 71, of Lisbon, at 10:26 a.m. Monday. All parties refused medical treatment.
-- A suspicious person was reported walking on Goshen Road toward the bypass at 9:36 a.m. Monday, looking into a mailbox. Police determined he was checking the mail before walking toward Salem.
