LISBON -- A man who injured three Salem police officers and an EMT during a fight July 30 in Salem entered a not guilty plea during arraignment in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court.
Joshua Jesiolowski, 32, Stratton Road, Salem, was charged with felonious assault, a first-degree felony, three counts of fourth-degree felony assault on a peace officer and misdemeanors of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
He was found indigent, with Charley Kidder appointed as his defense attorney. His bond remains $150,000 cash or surety.
During a recent hearing, Common Pleas Court Judge Scott Washam set a final status hearing for 9 a.m. Jan. 18, with a jury trial set for Jan. 29.
The felonious assault resulted from Jesiolowski allegedly causing serious physical harm to Sgt. Brandon Smith, who suffered a broken leg and was hospitalized because of the defendant's alleged violent behavior and actions.
The three assaults on peace officers resulted from Jesiolowski allegedly striking Patrolman Doug Osberg in the face while impaired by drugs, causing physical harm and a cut to the face, along with striking EMT Alan Masters in the head in the back of an ambulance and causing serious physical harm to Patrolman Cody Ray by kicking him and fighting him, injuring his back and causing him to be hospitalized.
Also in Common Pleas Court:
-- Charles McQuillan, 64, Youngstown, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree felony assault, with sentencing set for Oct. 13. Charges of aggravated menacing and resisting arrest will be dismissed. During an incident July 4 in Columbiana, McQuillan had been accused of threatening to shoot the store clerks at the Marathon gas station, refused police commands to stop, resisted being handcuffed, and attempted to hit a police officer while being placed in an ambulance.
-- John Plavka, also known as Scooby, 51, Alliance, was ordered to prison for 10 months after pleading guilty to aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony. The term was ordered served at the same time as a two-year sentence out of Portage County that he recently received for two counts of theft. The drug charge involved methamphetamine on Dec. 5, 2022.
-- Tyler Laughlin, 28, West Pittsburgh, Pa., was placed on probation for three years and ordered to serve two days in the county jail, with credit for two days already served, for possession of heroin, a fourth-degree felony, and possession of fentanyl-related compound, a fifth-degree felony, for possessing an amount of heroin equal to or greater than 10 unit doses, but less than 50 unit doses and possessing a fentanyl-related compound on June 5, 2021.
-- Michael Swiger, 44, Weirton, W.Va., was ordered to serve 90 days in the county jail, with credit for 34 days, leaving 56 days to serve after his probation was dishonorably terminated for violations. Charles against him included possession of a fentanyl-related compound and aggravated possession of drugs, both fifth-degree felonies, for possessing methamphetamine and a fentanyl-related compound on Feb. 3, 2022.
-- Angel Lewis, 37, Dutchtown School Road, Rogers, was ordered to serve up to six months at the Eastern Ohio Correction Center in Lisbon after being found in violation of her probation for improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony, and a misdemeanor for illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia. Her probation was continued to Jan. 20, 2026. Lewis had a loaded firearm in her vehicle during a traffic stop in Rogers on April 15, 2022 and then admitting to have a crack pipe while on the way to the jail.
-- Melanie Wood, 42, Hubbard, will remain on probation through Jan. 23, 2025 after having her intervention dishonorably terminated for violating the terms for charges of possession of fentanyl-related compound, a fifth-degree felony, and possession of drug abuse instruments, a misdemeanor. Wood was accused of possessing fentanyl and a syringe on Feb. 12, 2021.
-- Joseph Jackson, 25, Campbell, was placed on probation for three years after pleading guilty to possession of cocaine, a fifth-degree felony, and a forfeiture specification. He must forfeit $1,383. Jackson possessed cocaine and $1,383 on Sept. 23, 2021.
-- Amanda Beadnell, 35, Minerva, was placed on probation for three years after pleading guilty to obstructing justice, a fifth-degree felony, with the term to be served at the same time as probation being served for a case in Carroll County, which included a term at the Eastern Ohio Correction Center in Lisbon. Charges of falsification and criminal trespass were dismissed. Beadnell had been accused of communicating false information to deputies about the name of a man who was with her during a trespassing complaint on McGeehan Road, Lisbon, on Aug. 25. She also allegedly lied about her own identity while trespassing on the property, giving deputies her sister's information.
-- Deshawn Evans, 26, Austintown, was placed on probation for three years after pleading guilty to improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony. He received credit for 16 days served in jail. Evans possessed a loaded handgun during a traffic stop in Columbiana on May 27, 2022.
