FIRE CALLS

Salem

— Firefighters responded to the 900 block of East Sixth Street at 10:27 p.m. Thursday for a reported kitchen fire. When personnel arrived, no smoke was showing, and the resident was waiting at the door who advised that his bedroom outlet had caught on fire. Light smoke was present throughout the residence and further investigation located an outlet in the bedroom that was melted and burned up in the wall, and an electric heater was also observed with the plug melted off, and window curtains above melted from excessive heat. The electric outlet was shut off at the electrical panel and the wall around it was opened with a reciprocating saw to check for extension with none found. The area was also checked with a thermal imaging camera with no excessive heat found. The resident advised he had plugged an electric heater into the outlet and when he turned it on the electric breaker had kicked off and that when he re-entered the room after re-setting the breaker the outlet was smoking. All areas were checked again with no problems found and the resident was advised to notify an electrician to make necessary repairs to the electrical circuit involved.
