Sheriff’s Office

— A woman on Union Street, Washingtonville reported at 10:46 p.m. Saturday that she was in the kitchen when the back door began to open and a man began to walk in. She slammed the door shut while pushing him out and locked the door. He stayed in his car, a black Toyota sedan, until 10 minutes prior to a deputy arriving. No forced entry was made. Upon arrival, the deputy checked the area but had no contact with anything or anyone. The woman was unable to provide any other information on the person except that he was driving a black Toyota subcompact sedan.

— A caller at 9:42 p.m. Saturday reported a shooting complaint on Hazel Run Road, Washington Township, saying people were going to the property below shooting guns and she believed drug deals were occurring there. She said the property was recently auctioned off and she didn’t know who the current owners were.

— A deputy was requested by West Point Fire Department to escort them back to a fire where they received multiple complaints on state Route 45, Madison Township at 9:11 p.m. Saturday. Upon arrival, the fire was still burning, but contained. Contact was made with the people on the scene who wanted to argue about trespassing. They were told why a deputy was there and the fire department advised he was okay with the fire being contained this way. The people remained argumentative.

— A deputy was dispatched at 7:54 p.m. Saturday to New Waterford at the park regarding a man who threatened to shoot the caller. The caller said the man was wearing a head lamp and she did not see a gun or what he was wearing. The area was checked, with no contact made with anyone. The caller was escorted out of New Waterford.

— A domestic incident was reported at 4:38 p.m. Saturday in East Rochester on Common Street, West Township. Upon arrival, a deputy was advised nothing happened. No visible injuries were observed and no threats of violence were made. It was advised both people were just arguing. A domestic refusal was signed and the female half left for the night.

— A woman on state Route 154, Elkrun Township called at 4:34 p.m. Saturday to report a phishing phone call, saying she was contacted via Facetime and allowed the caller to access her contacts; however, when she was requested to enter banking apps, she hung up. She was concerned that personal information was leaked. She was told to contact her banks.

— Deputies responded at 12:54 a.m. Saturday to Dyke Road, Middleton Township for a report of a shed being broken into and entered. Deputies found that the building had been forcibly opened by the locked door handle being damaged. Nothing appeared missing at this time.

— A man on Bell Road, Elkrun Township reported at 8:33 p.m. Friday that per a court order out of Columbiana County Juvenile Court, a man from Center Township is not to be on his property and he was on the property as a backseat passenger in a vehicle filming and recording. He was told to contact Juvenile Court and an attorney.

— Suspicious activity was reported at 7:28 p.m. Friday at Bowman Cemetery, Lusk Lock Road, Elkrun Township, where a resident reported 20 people in the cemetery. Deputies checked the cemetery and area and had no contact with any people or vehicles.

— A woman on Lisa Lane, Center Township, reported at 8:25 p.m. Oct. 16 that her neighbor on Shelby Road has a protection order against a man and he’s back living at the residence and was there now. A deputy spoke with the neighbor, who said the man was not there and has not been there.

— A caller at 7:45 p.m. Oct. 16 reported a neighbor driving in his driveway and causing minor damage to the concrete at the property on Carbon Hill Road, Unity Township.

— A man on Bell Road, Elkrun Township reported at 6:48 p.m. Oct. 16 that another man keeps driving past his residence filming and taking pictures.

— An unruly juvenile was reported at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 in Damascus, with no more issues reported when a deputy arrived.

— Salem police requested at 5:53 p.m. Oct. 16 that a deputy make contact with a man on Salem Unity Road, Salem Township, and advise that he’s trespassed from the Salem UPS store, East State Street, Salem. A deputy spoke to him and he made contact with Salem Police.

— A Boardman woman called at 3:56 p.m. Oct. 16 regarding an ongoing case with Columbiana County Child Protective Services regarding a juvenile relative living with another relative in Madison Township. Since the safety plan expired, she said she had not seen the juvenile. She was advised to contact an attorney.

— A deputy at 11:54 p.m. Oct. 15 assisted Smith Township police, Mahoning County, with a traffic stop in their jurisdiction on U.S. Route 62 at Mahoning Avenue due to the driver, who was from Akron, appearing to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. It was determined the driver was having a medical issue. Sebring EMS transported the driver to Aultman Alliance Community Hospital, Alliance.

— Suspicious activity was reported at 11:24 p.m. Oct. 12 on Leetonia Road, Salem Township, with unknown people knocking on the door of a residence. A deputy checked the area, but did not find anyone.

–A missing person report was filed at 8:45 p.m. Oct. 12 when a person called and said the missing person was helping someone at an unknown McDonald’s location on Oct. 9 and the caller had not heard anything since then from him. Later on Oct. 13, the caller reported contact was made with the missing person and he was okay.

— A deputy at 4:20 p.m. Oct. 12 took a shooting complaint on Middleton Road, Fairfield Township and while there talking with the caller saw the neighbor shooting 50 yards south of the deputy’s position. The deputy observed a richocheted bullet come over their heads and hit the house. The bullet was in the insulation but the deputy was unable to locate it. The caller did not want charges and they talked amongst themselves about the incident.

— Loud music was reported at 2:40 a.m. Oct. 11 on State Line Road. Deputies didn’t hear any loud music coming from the residence and made contact with the residents who said they were having a party but it was over now and the music would be off for the night.

— A deputy at 8:03 p.m. Oct. 10 received a complaint about a neighbor shooting tannerite and guns in the Negley area, which is unincorporated. The deputy advised he’s unable to enforce anything unless it’s late at night. At 9 p.m., a second call came in regarding shooting again. The deputy returned and again explained he was unable to enforce anything at this time. The deputy stayed for a while and did not observe anything.

— A possible overdose was reported at 4:30 a.m. Oct. 10 in Butler Township. The person was loaded in an ambulance and transported to a hospital for evaluation.

— An ATV/dirt bike complaint was taken at 6:11 p.m. Oct. 5 on Black Road, but it was determined no crime occurred. An Ohio driver’s license was confiscated from one of the parties on behalf of the state of Ohio and sent to Columbus.

— An abandoned motorcycle was reported at Woodsdale Cemetery in Hanover Township at 4:22 p.m. Oct. 4. Multiple attempts were made to contact the registered owner but were unsuccessful. The caller was advised the motorcycle can be towed by the manager if they want.

Salem

— Officers responded to the 200 block of South Madison Avenue at 9:02 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a possible scam. Social Services contacted officers after a bank account of an elderly man was flagged for possible fraud. Officers spoke with the man and discovered he had been in contact with a person and given them personal information. The man advised that the person had attempted to open a card in his name but was unable to. Officers collected all information, and the case will be forwarded to the detective division.

— Officers responded to the 500 block of Walnut Street for a reported medical call at 2:29 a.m. Tuesday. The caller advised that a person was experiencing seizures and going in and out of consciousness, and that when regaining consciousness becomes aggressive with family. When officers arrived, the person in question was conscious and calm and medical personnel tended to the person. Officers stood by until they were not needed.

— Officers on patrol in the 200 block of West Tenth Street at 1:47 a.m. Tuesday observed the dome light of a vehicle to be on. Officers found that the vehicle was unsecure and attempted to contact the owner unsuccessfully.

— Officers on patrol in the 500 block of East State Street at 12:59 a.m. Tuesday located two suspicious people in McCulloch Park. Officers observed one of them, Christopher Halfhill, 29, Salem, to be hiding a large can of what appeared to be alcohol, and further investigations found them to be in possession of and consuming a 40 ounce can of Icehouse beer. Halfhill was cited for open container in public, and the alcohol was disposed of.

— Officers responded to the 100 block of North Lincoln Avenue at 10:38 p.m. Monday for a reported reckless operator. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle in question and found the driver Isac Williamson, 19, to be intoxicated and under the influence of drugs, and Williamson refused field sobriety testing and a subsequent breath test. Williamson was taken into custody and transported to the Columbiana County Jail charged with OVI.

— Officers responded to the 900 block of East State Street at 9:07 p.m. Monday for a reported intoxicated person. Officers attempted to locate the man in question but were unable.

— Officers responded to the 300 block of Newgarden Avenue at 6:57 p.m. Monday for a report of harassment. The caller advised that there are ongoing issues between herself and another person and their boyfriend. Officers spoke to several other people on scene who have also been having ongoing issues with the people in question, sending text messages from multiple different numbers and Facebook accounts and driving past their houses and place of employment. Officer advised the caller of their options and provided contact information to forward any text messages they received to be added to the report. Officers then went to speak to the people in question at their residence and were advised that the caller had tried to contact the boyfriend prior to officers’ arrival. They called them back and officers spoke to the caller and asked them why they were contacting the boyfriend if they were just making a report on them. Officers advised all parties that all of this would be documented.

— Officers took a report of fraud at the police department at 5:14 p.m. Monday. The caller advised that two fraudulent transaction had been made on his account, and that he had already been in contact with the bank and just needed a report filed. The caller was provided with a report number.

— Officers responded to the 900 block of East Sixth Street at 3:57 p.m. Monday for a report of illegal dumping. The caller advised they found a trash bag in their backyard and upon investing it found mail with a name and address. Officers were familiar with the name but advised that the individual had passed away several months ago.

— Officers responded to the 800 block of Summit Street at 3:49 p.m. Monday for a reported dispute between household members. The caller advised that a woman she let move into her residence has been causing issues and wanted police to remove them. Officers advised the caller that due to how long the woman had been living at the residence that they would need to be evicted. All parties involved were advised to remain separated for the evening.

— Officers were advised that a woman had called poison control asking questions about a chemical and stated that she had an infant with her, and that they appeared to be passing in and out of consciousness at 2:34 p.m. Monday. The caller advised that the woman stated she was from Akron, and that the Akron Police Department had advised the number they were calling from was pinging within Salem’s city limits. Officers checked several locations but were unable to locate the woman and detectives advised that the number she was calling from was a generated number from a texting app. Officers and dispatch were able to get the woman on the phone and asked several questions to attempt to locate her or obtain more information but the woman kept hanging up on officers and eventually stopped responding. Dispatch forwarded the information that was gathered back to the Akron Police Department.

— Officers responded to the 500 block of East Fourth Street at 10:56 a.m. Monday for a report of a possible scam. The caller advised that a resident at their facility had sent over $20,000 to an individual posing as a financial advisor. Officers advised the caller and resident on the proper steps to be taken to protect them from further scams.

— Officers responded to the City Electrical Department at 9:12 a.m. Monday for a reported breaking and entering. A locked door for storage was found to have been forced and damaged, and photos were taken of the damage. Due to a lack of security footage from the area of the incident, officers were unable to obtain information about the person in question.

— Officers responded to the 900 block of South Broadway Avenue at 7:41 a.m. Monday for a report of criminal damage to a motor vehicle. The caller advised that the catalytic converter was stolen off their work truck sometime between Friday and Monday morning. Officers requested an extra patrol in the area.

— Officers responded to the 100 block of West State Street at 1:55 a.m. Monday for a reported hold-up alarm. When they arrived, officers observed a man with a ski mask on later identified as Mark Knight, Salem, standing next to the counter by the front door observing the parking lot. Officers ordered Knight out of the store at gunpoint and detained him while the matter was being investigated, and it was found that the alarm had been activated due to Knight’s behavior. The clerk advised that Knight had been there for several hours and began to walk behind the camera looking at the cameras, and at one point state he was going to lock the doors and rob the place. A statement was left for the clerk to fill out, and camera footage will be provided at a later time. Knight was placed under arrest charged with inducing panic and transported to the Columbiana County Jail.

— Esteban Calel, 21, Salem, was cited for failure to control after his northbound vehicle on South Union Avenue conducted an illegal U-turn and went off the right side of the roadway striking a parking sign at 5:17 p.m. Sunday. The vehicle was removed by Sinsley’s towing.

— Officers responded to the 100 block of Woodland Avenue at 3:44 p.m. Sunday for a reported juvenile complaint. The caller advised that she found a THC gummy in her grandson’s backpack and wanted it disposed of, and that she would be in contact with her grandson’s probation officer to handle the issue.

— Officers responded to the 400 block of East Euclid Street at 3:41 p.m. Sunday for a report of loud music from a vehicle. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle in question.

— Officers responded to the 200 block of East Seventh Street at 2:20 p.m. Sunday for a reported suspicious person. The caller advised that there was a man walking around in backyards. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the person in question.

— Officers responded to the 900 block of South Union Avenue at 1:57 p.m. Sunday for a reported person impersonating a police officer. Officers spoke with the involved parties and took Drake Schmidt, 20, Wampum, Pennsylvania, into custody charged with impersonating a peace officer. Officers released Schmidt with a court summons after processing.

— Officers responded to the 600 block of East Sixth Street at 11:08 p.m. Saturday for a reported suspicious person. The caller advised that someone had stolen an Amazon package off his front porch and ripped the camera off the side of his house. Officers checked the surrounding area thoroughly but did not locate the man. A video of the man going through a nearby yard was sent to officers and they advised that charges would be filed if the person was located.

— Officers responded to the 2400 block of East State Street at 7:54 p.m. Saturday for a report of a possibly intoxicated driver. Officers located the vehicle and observed no visible registration. A traffic stop was conducted, and officers did not observe any signs of impairment and issued the driver a warning for obstructed registration.

— Officers on patrol in the 400 block of West State Street at 6:51 p.m. Saturday observed an illegal open fire. The fire department responded and explained the rules for burning.

— Officers on patrol in the 1600 block of South Lincoln Avenue at 3:35 p.m. Saturday for a reported open container. Officers contacted the parties involved and advised them to move along.

— Officers spoke to a person at the police department at 2:30 p.m. Saturday for a report of possible threats being made on social media. The person advised that they had received messages threatening her which were shown to officers, and a copy of the threats was submitted. Officers located the juvenile in question in the 300 block of Newgarden Avenue, took them into custody, and transported them to the Louis Tobin Juvenile Attention Center.

— Officers responded to the 400 block of East Fifth Street at 2:17 p.m. Saturday for a report of trespassers. The caller advised that two people who had been trespassed from the property had returned. Officers spoke with the people in question and advised them of the consequences if they returned to the property.

— Officers responded to the 400 block of East Euclid Street at 12:29 p.m. Saturday for a question about a package not delivered to the right address. The caller advised that they selected an old address which they could no longer return to and didn’t know what to do. Officers advised them to contact the post office to try and have the package held there for pickup.

— Officers spoke to a person at the police department at 12:25 p.m. Saturday regarding a report of theft. The person advised that their business had cashed a check for an individual which had been returned for insufficient funds. Officers provided them with the bad check packet and their options for dealing with the situation.

— Officers responded to the 100 block of West Third Street at 7:36 a.m. Saturday for a report of possible criminal trespassing. Officers spoke with the person in question, Michael Miller, 45, Negley, who was found to have an active warrant out of Mahoning County and took him into custody. Officers met with a Mahoning County Sheriff’s Deputy who took custody of Miller.
