Richard “Budda” Francis Reed

Together Again

CORTLAND– Richard “Budda” Francis Reed, 86, passed away Thursday, Nov. 19, 2020 at his home in Cortland.

He was born on Aug. 10, 1934 to Martin L. Reed and Elizabeth “Bessie” Duncan Thomson (Reed) Rowe in Salem, Ohio.

Richard graduated from Salem High School in 1952.

He married the love of his life, Janet Sue (Sarchet) Reed on Oct. 22, 1954, and were married over 63 years until her passing.

The Reeds moved from Salem to Warren in 1959, where they lived and raised their family.

Richard retired after 41 years working for Republic Steel, WCI at the BOF.

After retirement, he and his wife enjoy traveling, antiquing, spending time with family and friends and their many summers at Geneva-on-the Lake.

Mr. Reed was very active in youth and high school sports. He was the co-founder of the neighborhood Warren Little Cobras, along with Jack Begalla.

He coached gadget ball, little league and was president and served on the Board of Directors for the Warren Little League for nine years.

He was also the Vice President of the Warren Little Raiders, a Charter Member and Officer for the Warren Western Reserve Quarterback Club, the Warren Western Reserve Rebounders Club, Warren G. Harding’s Rebounders Club and was also a Warren Area Jaycees member. He also acted as the Assistant Cub Master of Pack 218 for four years.

Mr. Reed was known as a loving family member, mentor, friend, co-worker, neighbor who had a quick wit and wanted to make sure you smiled and laughed.

He loved his glider outside his door, his wind chimes, a butterfly that would pass by and he would point out to be his wife, his beautiful fern he would receive yearly from his cousin, Kay, and lastly, the pleasure of being quiet in his own thoughts.

Mr. Reed is survived by his daughter, first best girl and guardian angel (this statement added by his request), Marcy Lynn (Reed) Sywyk and son-in-law, Nick Sywyk.

His number-one-grandson, Devin Reed McMurphy and great-granddaughter, Zoe Kate McMurphy; his cousin Kay Minamyer[RM1] and family; grandson, Chase Reed, Catrina Reed; great-granddaughter, Leina Marie King; and half-sister, Paul St. John (John).

Mr. Reed requested to thank and send love to his second best girl and guardian angel, Cindy Kinnison who has been friend/family throughout the years, who unfailingly took care of him and his wife, Janet. And also, to his third best girl, Molly, Cindy’s dog whom he loved and fed cinnamon rolls while they enjoyed their cup of morning tea.

The family would further like to thank their Cortview Village friends/neighbors for their love and support throughout the years. “He will miss BINGO!”

And lastly, to extend thanks and love to Dr. Bahaa Awadalla and his wonderful staff for their many years of love and care.

Mr. Reed’s daughter found a clipping from a newspaper that she found in her father’s jewelry box after his passing, which states “If there were, in the world today, any large number or people who desired their own happiness more than they desired the unhappiness of others, we could have paradise in a few years.” Truly something to reflect on….

Preceding him in death is his beloved wife, Janet Sue (Sarchet) Reed, his father, Martin L. Reed, his mother, Elizabeth (Bessie) Duncan Thomson (Reed) Rowe, son, Mark L. Reed and great granddaughter Aime Lynn Reed.
