Walter L. “Bing” Newton

Walter L. “Bing” Newton, 87, of Leetonia, died Saturday, March 12, 2022, at the Cleveland Clinic surrounded by his family.

He was born in Washingtonville, Ohio, to the late Theodore and Loretta Newton. He graduated from Leetonia High School and Kent State University, later teaching science at Crestview and Salem Middle School and coaching the high school track at Salem. Bing started and sponsored the Wayne Russell track meet for many years where athletes from around the state came to Salem to compete. His success as a track coach was recognized by his induction into the Salem High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Bing was a friend to all and a mentor to many. After retirement, he helped found and lead the Men of Faith — a group of Christian men who met for breakfast monthly, and Men’s Rally in the Valley, an annual event with Christian speakers and musicians. He felt a strong calling to lead others to Christ.

Bing is survived by wife of 65 years, Peggy; sisters-in-law Sally Hill and Delores Newton; daughter Debbie (Dan) Schloemer of Willard, Ohio; sons Chip (Bonnie) of Leetonia and Lance of Canfield; grandchildren Mandy, Mark, Matt, Luke, and Mara; and great-grandchildren Lily, Dayne, Tate, Mitch, Quincy, and Eliza. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gary; sister-in-law Shirley Richards; and brother-in-law Bob Hill.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2022, at 10 AM at the Greenford Christian Church with Rev. John Bush and Rev. Tim Ginter officiating. A time of visitation will be held on Friday from 3-7 PM at the church as well as 9-10 AM Saturday. The burial and committal service will take place at Oakdale Cemetery for only the immediate family.

Arrangements were entrusted to the care of the Greenisen Family of Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services, Salem.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Men’s Rally in the Valley, 9520 Washingtonville Rd., Canfield, OH 44406.
