Thomas Alan Ballintine

1944-2022

On Dec. 5, 2022, Thomas ("Tom") Alan Ballintine, 78, went to be with the Lord.

Tom was born on Aug. 22, 1944 in New Kensington, Pennsylvania to Oscar P. Ballintine Jr. and Rosalie Schneider Ballintine. The family moved to Columbiana, Ohio were Tom graduated from high school. In 1965, Tom married the love of his life, the former Virginia ("Ginny") Thomas of Bay Village, Ohio. Tom studied chemistry at Capital University in Columbus and received his bachelor's degree in 1968. Tom went on to receive his Ph.D. in chemistry from Southern Illinois University in 1973. After receiving his doctorate, Tom accepted a two-year post-doctoral position at the University of North Dakota. That two-year position turned into a 34-year career as a professor teaching. Tom also spent a number of years as a professor with the Integrated Studies program helping students form links between topics covered in their Essential Studies as well as with their daily life.

Tom was a true "renaissance man." Tom and Ginny built their house in Emerado, North Dakota, doing most of the work themselves. Tom could repair almost any mechanical device. Tom was also deeply involved in his church and community. Tom served as president of his congregation at Ascension Lutheran Church. Tom also served as the Assistant Fire Chief of the Emerado Volunteer Fire Department.

Tom is survived by his two children, daughter Cynthia (John) Taylor and son Steven Ballintine; his grandchildren Danielle (Gregory) Meyer and Justin Lacrosse; his great-grandchildren Addilynn Meyer, Hannah Meyer and Gregory L. Meyer III ("Trey"), his sister Judith Brewer and brother Carl Ballintine.

Funeral services will be held in the chapel at Firestone Park and Cemetery on Feb. 25, 2022 at 2 p.m.
