1933-2023
Dr. Dardo Sergio Torti died on Nov. 4, 2023, at his home in Salt Lake City, Utah surrounded by his wife, Frances Torti, of 60 years, his children and grandson. Born in 1933 in Bellville, Cordoba, Argentina, the son of Italian mother and Argentine father, Dardo studied medicine at the University of Cordoba and took a rural position in a mountain town called Salsipuedes (which translates as 'Leave if you can'). On a whim, he did just that, and in 1960 came to Barberton, Ohio for an expected two-years time to work in the hospital. There he met his life partner, Frances, a registered nurse. After two years, they moved to Bronx, New York, where he completed a residency in pediatrics. In 1968, they settled in Salem, Ohio where for 25 years he practiced medicine and raised his three daughters Anna, Sylvia, and Marisa.
He was a dedicated physician, kind and caring, willing to take calls at any time of day, zip to the hospital in the middle of the night on his Vespa, and many times, he continued the tradition of house calls. Dardo loved being a doctor and his patients loved him. He enjoyed living in Salem in the company of his many friends with whom he played tennis and traveled. He was known for being exceptionally kind, sweet, good-humored, and generous. He loved opera and more than once, he was found in the driveway, listening to the end of one piece of music before entering the house. Often, he was dramatically 'conducting' the piece as well.
In 1993, Dardo and Frances retired to Buenos Aires, Argentina where they enjoyed the museums, theater, and opera. They spent half their time in his hometown of Bellville, where he had coffee every morning with friends from kindergarten, spent time with his brother and sister, as well as his mother, who lived to 96.
In 2019, he and Frances returned to the States, to Utah, to live close to their daughters and grandson. Until his last days, he maintained his humor and love of learning. He read constantly and watched action films and documentaries, and never lost his interest in medicine. His energy and spirit touched all. His loss is felt by brothers and sisters-in law, nieces, nephews, as well as friends old and new. He devoted so much of his life to the healing of others; the world is a better place because of him.
