John B. Patterson Sr. 90, of Salem, passed away at 11:33 a.m. Friday, October 25, 2024, at Salem Regional Medical Center.
He was born on March 2, 1934, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of the late George and Elfrieda (Crunkleton) Patterson Jr.
John retired from Freshmark (fka A&P and Carriage Hill) packing plant as a Supply Chain Manager in Salem. He was a 1953 graduate of Commadore Perry High School in Pittsburgh, then went on to Mount Union College until he was drafted into the US Army. He was later in life presented an honorary degree from the College. John was very active in the Mt. Union Alumni Association and a season ticket holder for the games at the college. He was a high school football and basketball referee in the Steel Valley area. In retirement he enjoyed playing in golf leagues and traveling with his wife in US and Caribbean.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, The former Mary Elizabeth Dunlap, whom he married on August 25, 1956; children Yvonne (Kevin Kollman M.D.) Patterson M.D., of Port Matilda, Pa., and John (Bonnie) Patterson of Salem; grandchildren Casey Kegelmyer, Daniel Mabry, Kera Robinson, Kristopher Kollman and Kayla Hennon; great-grandchildren Ismena, David, Elias, Amyla and Jace; plus many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Jeanette Walker.
A private service will be held at the Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services with the Rev. Stanley Graybil officiating. The burial will immediately follow at Grandview Cemetery in Salem. The Salem Honor Guard will render militaty honors at the service.
