Carol Ann Dougherty

1937-2024

ALLIANCE — Carol Ann Dougherty passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024, at Brookdale Alliance.

Born on May 17, 1937, in Salem, Carol was the daughter of Carl and Margaret (Williams) McQuilkin.

A proud graduate of Salem High School, Carol’s passion for English led her to a fulfilling career at Boardman Middle School, where she inspired countless students with her love for literature and language. After starting her family, she took time away from teaching to raise her daughters, then continued to influence young minds as a substitute teacher at Salem High School.

She was a gifted artist whose works were admired by many. Her artistic talents were a testament to her ability to see beauty in the world and to share it with others through her paintings.

An avid traveler, Carol’s adventures took her to many places including Italy, Ireland, and Ghost Ranch in New Mexico. She had an insatiable curiosity about the world, always jotting down notes on the fascinating things she learned along the way. Carol’s love for reading and her commitment to lifelong learning were hallmarks of her character, as was her wonderful and ornery sense of humor.

She was a devoted member of the Salem First United Presbyterian Church, where sang in the choir and also demonstrated her athletic spirit on the church’s softball team.

Above all, Carol was a loving mother and grandmother. She adored her family and took immense pride in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. Her love for animals was yet another facet of her compassionate nature.

Carol leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, survived by her daughters, Colleen Dougherty (Scott Sweeney) of Maynard, Massachusetts, and Kelly Laubacher (Doug Woodyard) of Canton; and her cherished grandchildren, Alyssa, Lauren, Zach, Ryan, and Shauna. Her life was enriched by their presence, and she in turn enriched theirs with her boundless love and support.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Richard “Dick” Dougherty, who passed away in December of 2022.

Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance of Carol’s remarkable life with a memorial service at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25 at the Salem First United Presbyterian Church, where attendees will have the opportunity to celebrate her legacy and share memories of a life well-lived. A luncheon will immediately follow in the church fellowship hall.
