John ‘Roger’ Hull

1940-2025

SALEM — John Roger Hull, a steadfast pillar of his community and a devoted family man, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2025, at Grace Wood Senior Living in Salem, Ohio. Born on June 29, 1940, in Gavers, Roger’s life was a rich tapestry of dedication, service, and love.

Roger was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving his country from 1958 to 1961. After his military service, he embarked on a 40-year career with General Motors in Lordstown, retiring in 2008 with the respect and admiration of his colleagues. Roger’s commitment to his work was paralleled by his faith; he was a long-time attendee of the Salem First Friends Church, where he found great solace and community.

Roger’s soulmate and beloved wife of 62 years, Arla (Hoffman) Hull, stood by his side through life’s many chapters. Together, they raised a family that includes their caring children, David Hull of Salem; Carolyn (Kevin) Murrock of Twinsburg; and, Darin (Lisa) Hull of Norwalk. Roger was blessed with five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored.

Beyond his family life, Roger was known for his contribution to local sports as an official, leaving a legacy of fair play and civic involvement. In his retirement, he found joy in repairing washers and dryers. It was not uncommon to see John enjoying the small pleasures of life, like the gentle breeze and flow of traffic from his front porch or delighting in the company of his grandchildren and grand puppies.

Though he leaves behind a life rich with memories, Roger’s love and lessons continue to live in the hearts of those he touched. He was preceded in death by his parents, John F. Hull and Mary E. (Hays) Hull. Roger’s life exemplified strength, honor, and compassion, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Calling hours will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at Salem First Friends Church. A funeral service led by Rev. Pete Fowler will follow at 12:30 p.m. with burial to take place at Highland Memorial Park in Beloit.
