Virginia Mae (Conrad) Althouse, 109, entered into a Holy Rest with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Copeland Oaks and Crandall Medical Center, Sebring, Ohio.
She was born on June 12, 1916, at home in Salem, Ohio, a daughter of Emerson and Eva Conrad.
Virginia was a 1934 graduate of Goshen High School, Damascus, Ohio. She was a devoted mother and housewife, also holding a Nursing Degree from Hannah Mullins Nursing School at the age of 48.
She was a longtime and faithful member of the Salem First Methodist Church, Salem, Ohio and until the last few years continued to participate in weekly services. Virginia was a beautiful soul who was always full of joy, never having an unkind word and was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. Through all the years she felt she had been very blessed because she was surrounded by love. In her younger years she and her sister Juanita were blessed with beautiful voices and loved singing duets, with the whole family being musically talented.
Generations of family came together on Saturday, June 14, to celebrate her 109th birthday.
She said “beautiful people have come to see me” and was thrilled to be with the little children. One of her favorite party games was “cornhole” and competing with her 9-year-old great-great-grandson Palmer. She has left us with a lasting legacy and her love of family.
During her lifetime she and her husband Don enjoyed traveling and camping to Arizona and California, with many fishing trips to Michigan and Canada. They also loved living on their farm for many years. During their retirement years they wintered in Florida and going to an annual Christian Retreat.
Survivors include her devoted son, Edward D. Althouse of Smethport, Pa.; seven nieces, four nephews, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Donald J. Althouse, in 1998, whom she married soon after high school in 1935, and were childhood sweethearts; her brother, Nelson (Jessie) Conrad; her sister, Juanita (Ray) Starbuck; and daughter-in-law Janet Althouse.
A Celebration of Life Service will be on Saturday, June 28, 2025, 11 a.m. at the Salem First Methodist Church, Salem, Ohio with Rev. Byron Bufkin officiating. A time of visitation will be one hour before services in the parlor. The burial will take place at the Upper Springfield Cemetery, in Damascus, Ohio.
The entire family expresses their deepest gratitude to the entire staff at Copeland Oaks and Crandall Medical Center and Dr. Vrable. They loved her and gave her wonderful care for many, many years.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Salem First Methodist Church (General Fund) 244 S. Broadway Ave., Salem, Ohio 44460.
