Calvin Michael Weitz

1950-2025

SALEM — Calvin Michael Weitz, 75, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2025, in the emergency room of Salem Regional Medical Center.

Calvin, affectionately known as “Mike,” was born on June 25, 1950, in Alliance, Ohio, the son of the late Calvin B. and Jane “Judy” (Maurer) Weitz.

Mike was a graduate of Sebring High School, Class of 1968. With a passion for justice and service, he attended Kent State University, majoring in criminal justice. This was the beginning of what would become a distinguished career in law enforcement. Mike’s career started as a patrolman with the Sebring Police Department, and in 1976, he joined the ranks of the Salem Police Department. His rise through the ranks culminated in his retirement as police chief in 2006, after more than three decades of commitment to law enforcement and the safety of his community. He was instrumental in training and mentoring his fellow officers.

On Feb. 12, 1972, Mike wed Ramona Moyer. Their union was one of mutual respect, love, and shared joy, lasting 53 years. Together, they welcomed two sons into the world, Kirk and Erik. Mike’s role as a father was one he cherished deeply. The family grew with the addition of four grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as “Pop Pop.” Mike’s presence as a family man was profound. His happiest moments were those spent surrounded by his family, enjoying life’s simple pleasures together.

Mike’s interests and hobbies reflected his meticulous and appreciative nature. He took great pride in detailing his cars and maintaining a pristine yard. Music was another of Mike’s joys, with the sounds of Motown often filling his home. His intellectual curiosity was evident to all who knew him. Mike was a well-read individual and knowledgeable on countless topics. He was a great listener whose sage advice was valued by friends and family.

Described as caring, generous, and selfless, Mike was a man whose generosity knew no bounds. He had a knack for helping others, often putting their needs before his own. His selflessness extended beyond his family, and it was a trait that touched the lives of many.

Mike leaves to carry on his memory, his wife Ramona, sons Kirk and Erik, daughter-in-law, Megan and grandchildren, Vivian, Calvin, Ivan, and Zia. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Sharon Zamarelli, Belinda Palmer, and Debbie McLaughlin and numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved and guided throughout the years. He also valued close friends from childhood, Gary “Goof” Davis and Mike Lee, collectively known as “The Three Amigos.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, Robert “Bobby” and Ruby Moyer, brothers-in-law Joseph Zamarelli and Jeff McLaughlin, and niece Jenny McLaughlin.

Per Mike’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or service.
