Ethel Joyce Fitzpatrick
1927-2025
SALEM — Ethel Joyce Fitzpatrick, 98, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2025, at Grace Woods Senior Living in Salem.
Ethel, affectionately known by her middle name “Joyce,” was born on July 29, 1927, in Washingtonville, Ohio, the daughter of the late Edwin Russell and Carrie Mae (Sanders) Fitzpatrick.
At the young age of 17, Ethel embarked on a remarkable career at People’s Drugstore as a retail clerk as well as being responsible for the store’s cosmetics displays. Her career, which later transitioned through Lane’s Drug Store and Rite Aid, was marked by a commitment that lasted for over four decades, retiring at the age of 62. Joyce’s flair for creativity and her exceptional skills as a cosmetics display designer earned her accolades both within her community and on a national level. She had the opportunity to travel to New York as she was recognized for her exceptional display work.
A woman of quiet grace, Joyce found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Her family was the cornerstone of her existence. Although Joyce never had children of her own, she embraced and adored her role as the “favorite aunt” with open arms and a heart full of love. Her nieces and nephews were the apples of her eye, and she never missed an opportunity to spoil them with their favorite candies–a sweet reminder of her unconditional love and the special place they held in her heart. The love for Joyce was often returned with gifts in her favorite color of purple.
Joyce is survived by her sister, Jerilyn Emig of Canton, and a host of nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by sisters, June Rogers, Jean Keefer, and Jane Secrest; brothers, Joe Fitzpatrick and Jim Fitzpatrick, as well as two infant brothers.
A private service for the family was held at Hope Cemetery in Salem.
