Richard John Theiss

Richard John Theiss–artist, architect, musician, aviator, U.S. Army veteran, writer, Disney creative, and devoted family man–passed away peacefully at home in Salem, Ohio, on January 22, 2026, at the age of 95.
Born on March 28, 1930, in Salem, Richard’s lifelong passion for creativity and service shaped a remarkable journey. As a gifted musician, he performed professionally for decades in big band and Dixieland ensembles across the country. He earned a degree in engineering and architecture from Kent State University and later established his own architectural firm in Florida.
Richard served as a Secret Intelligence Officer in the United States Army during the Korean War. His innovative spirit eventually led him to Walt Disney World, where he realized a dream as a W.E.D. Artist and Engineer, contributing as a senior artist, animator, designer, writer, composer, announcer, and musician.
With his wife of 56 years, Hope (Trivette) Theiss, Richard blended his love of aviation and entertainment by writing and producing programs for major events including the opening of EPCOT Center and Super Bowl XVIII halftime programming. He also served as vice president of Theiss Aviation, Inc., sharing his passion for flight with many.
A proud graduate of Salem High School’s Class of 1948 and later an Honored Alumnus, Richard remained deeply connected to his hometown throughout his life. His unwavering walk with God was a guiding force in all he did. He will be remembered for his faithfulness, creativity, service, warmth, and storytelling spirit.
He is survived by his beloved wife Hope; children Marc Delp, Cindy (Blaine) McCrary, Michelle Groves, and Shawn (Rachel) Theiss; 12 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Mary Theiss; and sisters Marian Whipkey, Louise Thompson, and Dorothy Strain.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on March 28, 2026, at the Salem Golf Club in Salem, Ohio (1967 S. Lincoln Ave., Salem, OH 44460).
