Robert E. Roberts

1929-2026

SALEM — Robert E. “Bob” Roberts of Salem, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, businessman, pilot, and community leader, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, generosity, and quiet determination.

Born in East Palestine, Ohio to Jerry and Gladys (Burke) Roberts on May 14, 1929, Bob was a proud lifelong resident of the community he loved. He graduated from Salem High School in 1947 and went on to earn his engineering degree from ICS and certification as a licensed Professional Engineer. He also served honorably in the Naval Reserve, demonstrating early in life the sense of duty and commitment that would define him.

A gifted engineer and entrepreneur, Robert founded and owned Robert E. Roberts Co., an engineering firm that served industrial clients worldwide. Alongside his wife, Marilyn, he co-founded and operated Mimi’s Cafe in Salem, creating not just a restaurant but a gathering place for friends and neighbors.

He was deeply committed to public service. Over the years, he served Salem as a member of the South Lincoln Avenue Architectural Review Board, PTA President, Kiwanis President and Lieutenant Governor, and member of the advisory board of the Salvation Army. He also served in several capacities at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Salem where he was a faithful member throughout his life. His leadership and steady guidance helped shape the community he cherished.

Robert had a passion for aviation and earned his pilot’s license, often flying his own plane and embracing the freedom of the skies. He and Marilyn traveled extensively throughout his life, including several humanitarian trips dedicated to helping children around the world. They enjoyed spending time at their vacation home in Tennessee, exploring the Smoky Mountains and the Knoxville area.

Bob loved dogs and had many of them throughout his life. He trained and showed several, earning awards at competitions and shows. He also enjoyed serving as a volunteer at Angels for Animals, helping to care for the many dogs in residence.

Family was the center of his life. He is survived by his devoted wife Marilyn Lenz Roberts, with whom he recently celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary, his children: Ron (Terri) Roberts and Diane (Paul) Young; his daughter-in-law Mary Roberts; his grandchildren Anne (Eric) Knudsen, Rob (Caitlin) Roberts, Dan (Karin Chase) Roberts, Ben (Emily Yoder) Roberts, Dr. Angela (Dr. Young) Choi, and Colin (Jeannine) Rank; and eight great-grandchildren who brought him immense pride and joy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Gladys Roberts; his son, Honorable Robert C. Roberts, Judge; and his brothers, Mike and Jim.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the caring staff of Copeland Oaks and Hospice of the Valley for their compassion and support.

Services will be held Friday, March 27, 2026, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 251 S. Broadway Ave., Salem, beginning with calling hours at 10 a.m., followed by a service at 11 a.m., with Pastor Jeremy Hollingshead officiating.
