Walter G. Liebhart
1929-2026
Walter George Liebhart, 96, slipped silently and sweetly into the presence of Jesus on May 3, 2026. He was a strong, stoic, and kind man of God who deeply loved and cared for his family.
A lifelong resident of Salem, Walter was born on Dec. 26, 1929, he was the youngest child of Joseph and Katherine (Stieger) Liebhart. He joins his family in Heaven including his beloved wife of 50 years, Alberta Howard Liebhart; his daughter, Vickie Liebhart; his sisters, Katherine Schultz, Elizabeth Noga, and Sue Uncapher; his brothers, Joseph, Robert, Edward, and Richard Liebhart; and his sons-in-law, Knox Chamberlin Jr, and Leonard Dailey Jr.
Walter graduated from Salem High School in 1948 and proudly served in the United States Coast Guard, stationed near New York City. Following his military service, he returned home to Salem, where he dedicated many years of service as the City Electrician until his retirement in 1989.
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Walt lived his life guided by faith, honesty and integrity. He believed in helping others and leading by quiet example. He enjoyed family vacations, capturing special moments with his camcorder, tending to his beautiful gardens each year, reading the Bible and newspaper daily, and quizzing his family on current events. He has a great sense of humor and always enjoyed a good joke.
He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Barbara Jean Dailey of Salem; his granddaughter, Lisa Chamberlin (John) Stump of Huntington, West Virginia; his grandson, Jesse (Amber) Dailey of Salem; and five great-grandchildren: Sarah, Emma, Jesse Jr., Willow, and Jasper Dailey.
Walter’s legacy of faith, strength, and love will live on in all who knew him.
