Sarah ‘Sally’ Chappell

1942-2026

SEBRING — Sarah “Sally” Chappell, 83, formerly of Salem, died Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at Alliance Hospital.

Born on June 12, 1942, in Akron, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late William C. Jr. and Noami (Harrington) Snowball. Sally graduated from Salem High School in 1960 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts with Honors from Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky, in 1964. Her education reflected the care, determination, and commitment to excellence that would characterize so much of her life.

Sally devoted a portion of her professional life to education, serving as a teacher at Salem High School from 1970 to 1971 before later working as a substitute teacher. She valued learning and the importance of guiding young people, and she carried that spirit into all areas of her life. Her quiet encouragement and steady presence left a lasting impression on those who knew her in the classroom and beyond.

Faith was an important part Sally’ life. She was a member of First Methodist Church of Salem, where she served on various boards and as a lay delegate to conference. Her service to the church reflected her deep faith in God. She was also active in the broader community through her involvement with the Kent State University at Salem Board, the Copeland Oaks Board, and the Salem Alumni Association Board, where she served as president in 1993. Even after moving to Copeland Oaks, she was member of liaison committee to the Copland Oaks Board, demonstrating her continued commitment and loyalty to the institutions and people she cared about.

Sally had a warm appreciation for travel and the experiences it brought. She especially enjoyed trips to Las Vegas and treasured time spent traveling with her husband, Ned. She also valued journeys taken with her sister and brother-in-law, including visits to Europe and Germany, as well as a memorable trip to Italy with friends. These travels were among the many ways she embraced life, companionship, and the joy of seeing new places with the people she loved.

On July 5, 1964, Sally married Ned Chappell, who preceded her in death on July 14 ,2016. Their marriage was a significant part of her life, and she carried his memory with her in the years that followed. She was also preceded in death by her son, Shawn Chappell, and her granddaughter, Chloe Elizabeth Chappell, as well as by her parents.

She is survived by her son, Chris Chappell of Salem, Ohio; her siblings, Bill Snowball and his wife Kathy of Wilmington, Ohio, and Becky Reeves and her husband Hugh of Fredericksburg, Texas; her grandchildren, Christian Chappell and Shawn Michael Chappell; and numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service will be held Monday, June 15, 2026, at 2 p.m. at First Methodist Church in Salem. Friends and family will be received one hour prior to the service at the church.
