SALEM- Claude J. Koon, 101, of Salem, died July 31, 2026, at Alliance Hospital. Claude Jerl Koon was born on December 11, 1924, in Queens, West Virginia, the son of the late Jessie and Elsie (Clapper) Koon.
Claude spent much of his working life as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service, a role that reflected his sense of responsibility and commitment to others. He took pride in serving his community and in doing his work well. In addition to his postal career, he enjoyed carpentry work, where his skill and patience were evident. He found satisfaction in building and creating with his hands.
A proud veteran, Claude served in the United States Army with the 299th Engineer Combat Battalion during World War II. His service placed him among the generation of men and women whose courage and sacrifice helped preserve freedom for others. He played an important role in helping build bridges that assisted in moving troops following D-Day, a contribution that reflected both bravery and dedication during a critical time in history. In later years he received the French Metal of Freedom for his efforts in the D-Day campaign. His military service remained an important part of his life and legacy. Family was central to Claude's life, and he treasured the years he shared with those closest to him. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Donnas Koon (Davis), whom he married on April 6, 1951. He is also survived by his children, Pamela (Bruce) Farrant of Salem, Richard (Cindy) Koon of Salem, and Miles (Debra) Koon of Texas. His legacy continues through 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him joy and pride. The love of his family was a constant blessing throughout his life.
In addition to his parents, Claude was preceded in death by his siblings, Maxine Thorne, Betty Scott, Clifford Koon, Carl Koon, Lawrence Koon, and Harry Koon.
Friends and family will be received from 11 a.m. until noon on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Realife Church. A funeral service to follow at noon, with Rev. Tim Lewis officiating. Burial will be at Bunker Hill Cemetery.
