Glenn R. "Hooker" Smith, 92, passed away on Aug. 3, 2026. His daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Gary Payne Sr., were by his side.
A longtime resident of Leetonia, Ohio, Hooker was born on April 30, 1934 in Washingtonville, Ohio, to Wilma I. "Sal" (DeJane) Smith and Russell E. "Hooker" Smith. He was preceded in death by parents, and his adored youngest daughter, Marci L. (Smith) Ugran King.
Hooker graduated from Leetonia High School in 1952 where he lettered all four years in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was very proud to have been inducted into the Leetonia Athletic Hall of Fame.
After high school, Hooker joined the Marine Corps. He was very proud to have served his country as a Marine, and considered himself a Marine until his passing.
After military service, he was a barber in Salem for 40 years. He not only had two daughters and many family members who loved him, he was blessed to have a many close extraordinary friends. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.
Above all else, Hooker loved his two daughters, Terri E. (Smith) Payne (Gary P. Payne Sr.) and Marci L. (Smith) Ugran King. Also mourning "Papa's" passing are his four grandchildren, Tyler Ugran, Taylor Ugran, G. Phillip Payne Jr. and Garrett Payne. He also leaves behind five great-grandchildren, Grace and MacKinley Ugran, and Geno, Mateo and Brianna Alfonso. He is also survived by his older sister Joanna (Smith) Rogers.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life at the Salem Elks Club on Sunday, Sept. 6, from 2 to 4 p.m.
