Jeffrey Lynn Hughes 66, formerly of Salem, passed away at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia, Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026.
He was born on Feb. 11, 1960, in Salem, the son of Betty (Wilson) Hughes and the late John Hughes Sr.
Jeff was a graduate of Salem High School and served in the Navy. He was the Fire Chief for The Salem City Fire Department, until he retired in 2016, with 26 dedicated years. He was a life member of the VFW Post 892 and Amvets Post 45. Jeff enjoyed being with family, reading, music, golfing, watching the Guardians play, he was a fan of OSU and Dallas Cowboys.
He is survived by his mother Betty Hughes; his wife, Kay (Green) Hughes, whom he married on Oct. 7, 2006; his sons: Shane (Brandie) Hughes, Doug (Christina) Juhasz, Isaac (Kate) Ieropoli, and his daughters: Danielle (Jerry) Robinette and Theressa (Stephen) Navarra; his grandchildren: Jeffrey (Bri) Juhasz, Allison (Alex) McGinnis, Deven and Noah Martin, Gwendolyn and Aurora Ieropoli, Natalie Navarra and great-grandson Whitney McGinnis; his siblings: John (Dianne) Hughes Jr., Kathy (Dennis) Miller, Rodney (Peggy) Hughes Sr. and many loved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father John Hughes Sr. in October 2023 and in September 2004 by his wife Toni Lee Hughes.
Services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 11 a.m. at the Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services, Salem, with Captain Amber Imhoff of The Salvation Army officiating. The burial will be at Highland Memorial Park following the services with Military Honors. The time of Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, at the funeral home, the Salem Fire Department will do the Last Call Service at 7 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Salem VFW after the Funeral Services on Saturday.
