SALEM -- Richard Thomas Stroka, 87, of Salem, Ohio, passed away suddenly Thursday evening, Sept. 3, 2026. He was born to the late John and Ann Stroka on Sept. 26, 1938, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and lived a life marked by devotion to his family, faithful service to his country, and a steady kindness that touched all who knew him.
He was the beloved husband of Rose Stroka, nee Castle, and the loving father of Amy Stroka Eshelman, Melissa (Chad) Gower, Rebecca (Mike) Palmer, Brian (Bobbie) Mitchell, Deidre Mitchell, and Stephanie (Tiffany) Mitchell. He is also survived by his brother, John (Marsha) Stroka; his sisters, Mary Ann (Dean) Walthour and Helen (Danny) Miller; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. His family was the center of his life, and he took great pride in the people he loved and the legacy he helped build through them.
Richard was a veteran of the United States Air Force, a chapter of his life that reflected his sense of duty, discipline, and commitment to something greater than himself. Following his military service, he retired from General Motors after years of hard work and dedication. He approached his work with the same dependable spirit that he brought to every part of his life, earning the respect of coworkers, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Those who knew Richard will remember him as a loving, intelligent, and generous man. He had a quiet strength and a warm presence that made others feel welcome and cared for. He was the kind of person who offered help without hesitation and gave of himself freely to family and friends. His wisdom, humor, and thoughtful nature left a lasting impression, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to share in his life.
Richard valued family above all else, and his greatest joy came from time spent with those he loved. Whether gathered for everyday moments or special occasions, he found happiness in being surrounded by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family. He understood the importance of connection, tradition, and steadfast love, and he carried those values with him throughout his life.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Though his passing leaves a profound void, the example he set through his kindness, integrity, and devotion will remain a source of comfort and inspiration. His life was one of purpose, service, and love, and the memory of Richard Thomas Stroka will be cherished always.
A life so well lived deserves to be remembered with gratitude and respect. Richard's family and friends will hold close the many memories they shared with him, finding strength in the love he gave so freely and the lasting impact he made on their lives.
Friends and family will be received Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Stark Memorial.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026 at 11 a.m., where friends and family will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
