Leila Martha Kirkwood

1944-2026

BERLIN CENTER --Leila Martha Kirkwood, 82, died at Poland Village on Oct. 2, 2026.

Leila was born on March 25, 1944, in Maugansville, Maryland, the daughter of the late Guy and Catherine (Emsminger) Foster. She was a 1962 graduate of Maple Heights High School and carried the values of hard work, kindness, and perseverance throughout her life.

Over the years, she devoted herself to many forms of service and labor, beginning with years of cleaning houses and later serving as an activities director at several nursing homes. She also worked as a library clerk and concluded her working years with Visiting Angels, where her compassionate nature was especially well suited to the care of others.

Leila was a faithful member of Ellsworth Community Church and lived her life in a way that reflected her commitment to family, faith, and community. She gave generously of her time through volunteer work with the March of Dimes, the Pregnancy Help Center in Youngstown, Habitat for Humanity, and hospice care. She also served as a Bluebirds leader, Boy Scout Troop 71 treasurer, and WR Band Booster treasurer. In each role, she offered reliability, encouragement, and a willingness to help wherever she was needed.

Those who knew Leila will remember her many talents and the warmth she brought into her home. She was a very good baker and enjoyed needlepoint and cross stitch. She also loved cats and found joy in their companionship

Leila was married to Donald Kirkwood on Aug. 4, 1963. He preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 2025. Together, they shared many years of marriage and the joys of family life. She is survived by her two sons, Westly Kirkwood and his wife Bonnie, and Dan Kirkwood and his wife Laura, as well as her daughter, Patty Kramer and her husband Lance. She is also survived by her four grandsons, Benjamin Kirkwood, Christopher Kirkwood, Jacob Kirkwood, and Robert Kirkwood. She also leaves behind her sister, Sherry Weamer, and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Norma and Bill Ross; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Leila was preceded in death by her siblings Jack Foster and Mina Baringer. Her family takes comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with those who went before her. A funeral service will be held on Friday, Oct. 16, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Stark Memorial in Salem, Ohio. Burial will follow at Ellsworth Cemetery in Ellsworth. Friends and family will be received one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
