Ohioans frustrated with the outdated nature of some state laws could see relief with a new bill called "Innovate the Code."
According to Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, the legislation would mean changes such as the ability to receive state tax documents electronically, attend hearings for driver's license suspensions remotely ... and simply avoid reading the word "telefax" in state code.
It is tempting to assume such a change was brought about by the pandemic, though Husted says the idea was around before COVID-19 struck.
Backed by Rep. Thomas Hall, R-Madison Township, and state Sen. Steve Wilson, R-Maineville, the bill takes advantage of a $500,000 artificial intelligence tool.
The bill will eliminate many of the requirements to travel to Columbus to conduct state business. That is good news. Unnecessary travel time and outdated language are certainly not the only reasons residents should want lawmakers to work to "Innovate the Code," but those things are a fantastic start.
