US House majority threatening standards

To the editor:

I worked for 48 years paying into Social Security and Medicare, earning these essential benefits for retirement and aging well in the community I helped build. This is Older Americans month that highlights the programming and systems we as a people created to support aging well. We create great wealth for all to share in and raised the standards of living over the last 70 years. But some in Congress do not want all to share.

Does the US House majority really want to throw those standards away with the hack-and-slash proposal and financial collapse in the debt ceiling and budget debates?

Holding the entire economy hostage by not approving a clean raising of the debt ceiling hurts not only those of us aging but our working children, and the futures of our grandchildren.
