Opposition to annexation and urging community action
To the editor:
I am writing to voice my strong opposition to the proposed annexation of our neighborhood from Perry Township into the city of Salem. It has come to my attention that the city is claiming the right to annex our properties based on a supposed deed restriction.
However, upon reviewing my own deed, I have found no such restriction, nor do I recall being informed about this possibility during the property closing process. I believe it is essential to express my concerns regarding this issue and encourage the community to join me in opposing this annexation.
First and foremost, I take issue with the lack of transparency surrounding this annexation attempt. It is troubling that the city is attempting to annex our neighborhood without allowing us, the affected property owners, a voice in the matter. This non-voting annexation infringes upon the principle of taxation with representation, which is a cornerstone of our democratic society. As responsible citizens, we should have the right to voice our opinions and contribute to decisions that directly impact our lives and finances.
Furthermore, the annexation would result in an increase in our neighborhood taxes. While I understand the necessity of taxes for the provision of essential services, it is unfair to impose an additional burden on the residents without their consent or input. It is essential to emphasize that many of us chose to reside in Perry Township precisely because of its distinct character, services and tax structure. The annexation would disrupt the stability and financial well-being of our community, placing an undue strain on hardworking families and individuals.
I urge all members of our community to stand together and make our voices heard. It is vital that we express our concerns and objections by writing letters and emails to Salem City Council and the mayor. By doing so, we can collectively convey the depth of our opposition and ensure that our elected representatives understand the magnitude of this issue for our neighborhood.
Let us emphasize the importance of community engagement and open dialogue, urging our leaders to reconsider this annexation proposal. Together, we can preserve the values and integrity of our neighborhood, safeguard our democratic rights, and work towards a solution that respects the wishes of the affected residents.
Thank you for providing a platform to express our concerns. I hope that through your publication, our message reaches the wider community, fostering a sense of unity and encouraging proactive involvement in local decision-making.
JAMES E. FOSTER,
Salem
