Washington D.C. air travel needs changes

To the editor:

As the Senate prepares to consider the 2023 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization bill, I encourage our Ohio senators to support modernizing the outdated perimeter rule and adding more flights to and from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).

The current perimeter rule is hurting the Washington, D.C. air travel market. It hampers healthy competition, resulting in high consumer costs for Ohioans and travelers across the country. DCA is the only airport in the nation that is subject to this federally imposed artificial restriction, and consequently, Washington, D.C. has become the most expensive metropolitan region to fly into and out of. In fact,

Dulles International Airport (IAD) was recently named the most expensive airport in the U.S. for domestic travel with an average ticket price of nearly $500.

Having served as a former Wellsville city councilman and school board member, I understand the importance of education and access to representation. Enhanced affordability and direct travel to Washington, D.C. would greatly benefit the students, families, business leaders and tourists of Wellsville. This is why I am a strong advocate for this bipartisan bill.

Thank you to all of our Ohio Representatives who supported this effort in the House, including Representative Bill Johnson. I urge Senators Brown and Vance to join in this cause.

John R. Morrow,

Liverpool Township
