#Every1KnowsSome1
To the editor:
#Every1KnowsSome1 was recently chosen as the theme for 2023 Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Each October service providers join together with allies to attempt to draw the nation’s attention to the problem of domestic violence. But, why say “Everyone knows someone?” Because it’s true!
According to the findings of the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, over 40% of Americans will be victimized by either sexual violence, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner within their lifetime. And it doesn’t matter if you are male or female, the number is over 40%. So, whether you are aware of someone’s personal situation or not, you do know a victim. You probably know several.
So if #Every1KowsSome1, what can we do about it? How can we be there for our friends. How can we respond to our family members? Must we remain silent and oblivious to the pain and suffering around us?
What should you do if someone discloses to you that they have been harmed by an intimate partner? The very first, very basic response should be one of empathy and caring. Intimate partner violence can happen to anyone. Victims are not to blame for the violence and abuse perpetrated upon them. Offer words of support. Ask, “What can I do for you?” Victims know what they need, follow their lead.
Support local programs that address the issue of domestic and sexual violence. The Christina House serves residents of Columbiana County with a hot line for information and referral, an emergency shelter, and a legal advocate to help with orders of protection. Ozer Ministries serves the area with counseling services that are trauma-informed.
Get the facts about intimate partner violence. Invite someone from Christina House to speak to your group, your school, your class. Donate to the shelter program. We accept donations of food, paper products and hygiene supplies as well as cash donations. Call the shelter to see if we have any specific needs. We welcome your questions.
