Is Ohio for sale?

2 min read

Dear editor,

I just saw where the GOP is pulling financial support from some races in other parts of the country so they can dump millions more into Ohio's races for Senate and Governor. Billionaires have spent millions on this race. Why?? And What is all the money spent on? I suppose much of it's spent on the hundreds of TV ads that bombard our prime-time watching. These ads are not fact-checked. They are full of nasty fear-mongering, intended to fire up the "culture wars". There is little about policy. What will these candidates really do for Ohioans should they get elected? Unlike commercial products regulated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), federal truth-in-advertising laws do not apply to political ads. It's a First Amendment, Free Speech issue. So they lie. They believe the one who spends the most money wins.

But for me, the billionaires are wasting their money on ads. I try to meet the candidates in person when they make the effort to come to my area, talk to other people who know them personally, research what they have done in the past, study their websites to learn about their proposed policies and determine who is most aligned with my values and goals. It's not enough to just vote. It's my responsibility as an American to know who I vote for. It's the most patriotic thing I can do. My vote is not for sale!
