A tale of two villages

To the editor: It has almost been a full year since the February 2023 train accident in East Palestine. While I have sympathy for the residents and businesses located close to the accident, I firmly believe that the vast majority of residents have recovered, at least in the short term, and have resumed living their lives as they did before February 2023. People went back to work, children went back to school, family and friends continue to meet. Life goes on. Most people want to go forward, and not dwell on a past that we cannot change. The people who were negatively impacted have ...

Rulli asks governor to prevent BMV closure

Dear Governor: I am writing to respectfully request your personal oversight and intervention in the proposed closure of the Salem, Ohio Office of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Salem is the largest city in Columbiana County, serving a population of over 20,000 if you include the contiguous townships. The Salem office transacted a total of over 70,000 process transactions, including motor vehicle and related transactions. The proposal to just shut this office down and move everything to Lisbon, a community of under 3,000 . . . and make that one office the only BMV office for the ...

Hang tough, trustees

To the editor: I have been following the recent news regarding the most current annexation issues between the City of Salem and the Perry Township Trustees. This, in my mind, boils down to whether or not deed restrictions on approximately 33 township properties — created 27 years prior, requiring such properties to annex into the city if and when the subject property becomes adjacent to the city boundary — are legally binding. The Trustees have apparently had this situation reviewed by legal counsel and have two legal opinions that the properties are not “annexable” in this ...

Use it or lose it: Never too old to earn a degree

To the editor: I remember when my aunt and uncle went back to college to earn their university degrees. At 55, my aunt decided to go back to college to earn a bachelor’s degree. My uncle always told her, you’re going to get older anyway, so why not earn a degree. Many times, we look at only the economic value of a degree. Economics and cost are essential, but it is not the only considerations to consider when determining the value that comes from having a college diploma. I like to be called “Dr. Rose” because it is a reminder of the honor I have for my parents, especially my ...

Ohio stands to benefit from affordable fuel

To the editor: Gas prices are on the minds of a majority of Ohioans in one way or another. The number you see at the pump can impact everything from your commute to work, to a vacation, and ultimately your family’s budget. However, many people may not know what all controls those gas prices and why Ohio’s role in global oil production leads to lower pump prices. Let’s look at our neighbors in Pennsylvania. According to AAA’s most recent fuel report, Ohio’s gas prices sit at an average of $2.81 a gallon. Just east of us, those heading to the pump can expect to pay 50 cents a ...
