Commends the work of East Liverpool Mayor

To the editor: East Liverpool Mayor Bobby Smith is certainly trying to clean up his city. Recently they condemned and boarded up yet another drug house. I believe, in 2024, he and his administration in conjunction with the Columbiana County Land Bank tore down over 30 structures and this year they are on schedule to tear down at least 32 more! Additionally, since Smith took office, there has been at least 40 drug raids conducted by the Columbiana County Drug Task Force in conjunction with the East Liverpool Police. This in itself is an amazing feat! Although I live in Calcutta, the ...

We must protect our electoral integrity

To the editor: I am profoundly convinced that our nation is on the brink of a transformative era. We are poised to forfeit our fundamental right to choose and cast our votes. The current administration appears intent on perpetuating the incumbent president, or the leader of the Trump Party, in power indefinitely, potentially after 2028. This unsettling possibility incites a profound sense of urgency among citizens committed to safeguarding the tenets of democracy. The erosion of voting rights represents not merely a political concern but a threat to the very fabric of our ...

Support Ohio Senate Bill 167

To The editor: When I founded Moving Wellsville Forward, it was about keeping our youth connected to their community. As a former councilman and school board member, I’m watching very closely how Ohio’s legislature is currently considering legislation to protect kids online, and right now there’s two competing approaches to using age verification to give parents more visibility as to what platforms their kids are using online. One, Senate Bill 167, is straightforward, the other, House Bill 302, is going to create a miserable headache for the parents it’s supposed to ...

Salem City/Perry Township annexation truths

To the editor: Ever wonder why Salem City Council has yet to void their annexation agreement ordinance scheme? I’ll tell you why. Because they plan on using it again after they and the Perry Trustees attempt to convince you to vote for the CEDA. Let’s go to the 10-10-23 meeting in city hall between city and township leaders with the Butchers. In spite of my previous letters, and which has shown them to be illegal penetration of a language created by the city which they cannot support by a legal annexation law in the Ohio Revised Code, this meeting brought yet another effort by ...

Trump ‘orchestrated’ removal of TV hosts

To the editor: Trump “orchestrated” the removal of Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel from television due to their disparaging remarks about him. Consequently, whenever anyone utters criticism of Trump that he finds objectionable, he will have his representatives eliminate them. I had presumed we resided in a nation that upheld the principle of free speech. As tensions escalate in the political landscape, the implications of such actions extend far beyond mere television programming. The unsettling notion that dissenting voices can be silenced under the auspices of a ...

Praise for American Legion Post 290

To the editor: On behalf of the city council members and city officials of Columbiana, I want to congratulate the American Legion Post 290 on another successful street fair — the 138th. We especially recognize Jake Sevek, fair manager, for his leadership in promoting and managing what is now the second largest street fair in Ohio. This beautiful and historic event continues to be a cherished homecoming for everyone who has ever called Columbiana their home. Starting on Thursday with one of the best parades in Ohio, it continues on through Saturday night as thousands walk the midway ...
