Salem girls claim title

EAST PALESTINE — Salem’s girls track and field team made an impact at Saturday’s East Palestine Girls Invitational by smoking the field with a sizable team victory.

The Quaker girls racked up 120 1/2 points. Second-place McDonald had only 69 points.

Salem got wins from Carly Hall in the 1600 (5:26.98) and 800 (2:29.19). Hall was also a part of the 1600 relay team that won in 4:20.17. Elizabeth Shontz won the shot put with a throw of 41-feet, 1-inch.

Crestview’s Krista Perry was the girls field events MVP as she won the discus (129-2) and was second in the shot put (38-0). Warren JFK’s Chloe Coates was the running events MVP.

East Palestine sophomore Mia Lee won the high jump (5-0).

In the boys William E. Ward Invitational, McDonald took the title with 80 points but several local standouts had big days.

Beaver Local speedsters Tanner Johnston, Zane Kinsey, Joe Monte and Caleb White set a school record with a time of 1:32.57 in the 800 relay. The previous school record was 1:33.41 set by the same team earlier this season.

Crestview’s William Hardenbrook won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.33. Rebel teammate Brandon Yanssens was first in the 400 (52.06).

East Liverpool’s Brannan Smith won the 800 by a good margin with a 1:59.57 time which was nearly three seconds more than the second-place finisher.

Salem’s Jax Booth turned in a winning effort in the long jump with a leap of 21-11.5.

Warren JFK’s Jesse Likens was the boys running events MVP. Springfield’s Coleson Kertesz was the field events MVP.

Invitational

EAST CANTON — West Branch’s girls ran away with the East Canton Invitational title on Saturday.

The Warriors scored 101.5 points to best the field. Marlington was second with 88 points.

West Branch’s Sophia Gregory won the 200 in 27.21. Alexis Gregory captured the 100 hurdles in 16.4. Angela Gossett grabbed first in the 300 hurdles (51.62).

The Warrior 1600 relay team of Sophia Gregory, Kennedy Berger, Emily Sprowl and Anna Lippiatt was first in 4:14.69.

On the boys side, West Branch’s Andrew Coffee won the 110 hurdles in 16.84 and 300 hurdles in 44.13.

Mitchell Malakhi took the triple jump in 37-8.75.

West Branch’s boys were second behind Marlington in the team standings.
