Titans top the PAC
LATROBE, Pa. -- The back-to-back reigning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champion Westminster College football team was picked to finish first in the PAC for the 2022 season.
The league's preseason poll, as voted on by PAC head coaches, sports information directors, and media panel in attendance, was announced Wednesday at the PAC Football Media Day, hosted by Saint Vincent.
Westminster collected 19 first-place votes and totaled 366 points to headline the poll.
"It is an honor," said ninth-year head coach Scott Benzel. "Obviously so competitive, in terms of the league and the teams that are represented. To have them think we potentially could be the flagship for the conference, it is a good accomplishment. But it is, as the football cliche goes, preseason and we have to go out and prove it."
Washington & Jefferson College finished second with seven first-place votes and Carnegie Mellon was third with 10 first-place votes. Geneva College was picked seventh out of 11 teams.
Golf benefit for police and firefighters
SALEM -- Salem Golf Club Women's Association is holding its fourth annual Police and Firefighters Golf Benefit on Sept. 10 at the club.
Invitations were sent to police and fire departments in Mahoning and Columbiana counties. The event is in appreciation for officers and firefighters.
Officers and firefighters will receive complimentary lunch at noon followed by a 1 p.m. shotgun start for the four-person scramble and concluding with an appreciation dinner..

Beaver opens with a win
CALCUTTA -- Beaver Local's golf team opened the season with a 200-220 win over Crestview on Thursday at Beaver Meadows.
For Beaver, Michael McKenzie had a 39, Kristian Lantz 41, Mikey Drushel 54 and Josh Smith 66.
For Crestview, Luke Requardt had a 42, Rod McCune 51, Tristan Milhoan 58 and Tom Farley 69.
The two will play again today at the Meadows.
