Indiana St. players killed

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) -- Indiana State University announced Sunday that three students died in a single-vehicle accident.

A release from the university's athletics department said five people were in the vehicle when it crashed, including several football players. Police were working to identify the three who died but social media posts indicated at least two of the dead were on the football team -- Chris Eubanks of Warren Township, Illinois and Caleb VanHooser of Lakota East in Ohio.

Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse said the crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. Sunday in Riley, Indiana. The vehicle left the roadway and hit a tree. It was on fire when deputies arrived.

Two passengers were able to be freed from the vehicle and were being treated for serious injuries, Plasse said. The driver and two other passengers were pronounced dead at the scene.

University President Deborah J. Curtis called the crash "a terrible tragedy."

Riley is about 10 miles from the university's Terre Haute campus.

Crew tie at home

COLUMBUS (AP)-- Juan Jose Purata scored in the 77th minute to offset a second-half brace by Columbus' Cucho Hernandez, helping Atlanta United earn a 2-2 draw with the Crew on Sunday.

The two teams waited out a lengthy rain delay before Atlanta United (7-10-9) went out and failed to win for an 11th straight time on the road, three off the team record.

Santiago Sosa scored his first goal of the season to give Atlanta United a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.

Hernandez pulled Columbus (8-6-11) even in the 66th minute with his seventh goal in nine matches.

Edwards claims UFC welterweight title

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Leon Edwards dropped Kamaru Usman with a kick to the head and neck in the final minute of the fifth round to win the welterweight championship at UFC 278 on Saturday night.

Usman appeared to be seconds away from a 16th consecutive victory, which would have tied an all-time UFC record, before Edwards came up with the stunning finish just in time. He delivered the knockout blow with 56 seconds left in the bout.

"That crosshead kick landed perfectly," Edwards said.

Edwards (20-3) is undefeated dating back to his previous bout with Usman in 2015. The British fighter rose to No. 2 in the welterweight division while accumulating nine wins in that stretch ahead of the title bout.

Usman (20-2) lived up to his reputation as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world for much of the bout. The Nigerian weathered a late first-round takedown and turned the tables with a late second-round takedown. Usman controlled position throughout the third round, earning two more takedowns, and led 39-37 on the judges' scorecards after four rounds. He appeared on his way to a win by unanimous decision before Edwards rallied in the final round.

"The octagon belongs to nobody," Edwards said. "No man is meant to hold the belt for that long. I said all week I felt like this was my moment. This is how it was meant to play out."

Edwards still believes he has plenty left to prove even though he is now the champion. He mentioned repeatedly how he didn't like how his body reacted to Usman's attacks throughout all five rounds.
