Salem High School senior Karlie Stith will continue her academic and wrestling careers at the University of Mount Union in the fall. Stith was the first Columbiana County girl to place at the state tournament when she was fourth at 143 pounds in 2021. It was a long road there, however, as Stith was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia as a child and was the subject of the 'Kisses for Karlie' fundraisers around town. Stith started competing in wrestling in junior high after watching her brothers wrestle. At Mount Union she will study nursing and hopes to become a pediatric nurse someday. The Purple Raiders' first women's wrestling team will begin competition in the fall.
