Grim shows grit
WOOSTER — Heartland Christian sophomore Cooper Grim pushed his Div. II state boys tennis singles quarterfinal opponent to the limit on Thursday, but ultimately the Lion bowed out in that round at the College of Wooster.
Gahanna Columbus Academy junior Nason Lo dropped Grim 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) to earn his spot in today’s semifinal against Pepper Pike Orange’s Illia Shcherbakov.
Shcherbakov, who came from Ukraine to Orange, lost only one match all season — to Grim in the district semifinal. He advanced to the state semifinal with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Cincinnati Seven Hills junior Adi Nayak. Nayak placed third at state in 2024.
Grim, ranked seventh in the class of 2027 by the Tennis Recruiting Network, came into the state tournament having not lost this season. Grim also advanced to the quarterfinal as a freshman.
In the opening round on Thursday morning, Grim breezed past Lexington sophomore Tony Palmer 6-1, 6-0.
On the other side of the Div. II singles bracket, Springfield Northwestern’s Aiden Yeager and Gates Mills Hawken’s Axwl Neely will face off in today’s other state semifinal.
Last year’s Div. II state singles champion Henry Lessard of Bexley teamed with his brother Sam to advance to the state semifinals of the Div. II doubles tournament on Thursday.
