Salem knows the way to regional

Salem’s Abby Knickerbocker passes the baton to Maggie Hopple in the 3200-meter relay on Thursday at the Salem Div. II district meet at Sebo Stadium.

SALEM — The Salem girls 3200-meter relay team is loaded for another state run.

The Quakers’ team of Abby Knickerbocker, Maggie Hopple, Jill Pieren and Maggie Hall ran together for the second time this season and raced to a Division II district title on a rainy Thursday at Sebo Stadium.

The Salem girls captured their fourth straight district title in a time of 9 minutes, 52.08 seconds — by far the best time in the area this season.

The Quakers have raced at state the previous six seasons, with Hopple and Hall on the last three state teams, leading the Quakers to a second-place finish in 2024 and a fourth-place finish in 2022.

Salem sophomore Maddie Gorby repeated as the district champion in the high jump by clearing 5-foot-0. Salem sophomore Peyton Colbert tied for second at 4-10.

They helped the Salem girls take the early lead in the team standings with 34 1/3 points. Canton South is second at 27 1/3.

The top four finishers in each event advance to the Austintown Fitch regional next week.

A pair of Salem juniors advanced in the field events — junior Lucas Adams was third in the boys long jump (20-11) and Maddy Andres was fourth in the girls shot put (34-7 1/2).

The Salem boys 3200 relay team of Parker Warren, Cooper Barth, Alex Rea and Aiden Wright qualified for regionals with a fourth-place finish (8:26.30).

District action concludes in Salem on Saturday with the remaining field events at 11:30 a.m. and the running finals at 12:30 p.m.
