Sanders will start for Browns
BEREA — Rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders will start for the Cleveland Browns in their preseason opener Friday against the Carolina Panthers.
Sanders, a fifth-round pick out of Colorado, is stepping in as injuries have limited the Browns’ options under center. Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel are sidelined with hamstring issues, and veteran Joe Flacco is not expected to play in the exhibition game. Recently signed Tyler Huntley will serve as Sanders’ backup.
It will mark Sanders’ first action with the starting offense after opening training camp near the bottom of the depth chart. The Browns had not given the rookie any first-team reps before this week.
Despite his draft position, Sanders was once projected as a first-round talent and is known for his strong pocket presence and accuracy. In his final collegiate season, he threw for over 4,100 yards and 37 touchdowns while completing 74 percent of his passes.
