Derek Wolfe to do meet and greet
CALCUTTA — A meet and greet with former NFL star and Super Bowl champion Derek Wolfe will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 13 at the new Derek Wolfe Athletic Complex.
Fans and community members will have the opportunity to meet Wolfe in person, and interact with the former NFL star. Participants will also have the opportunity to receive one of the first views of the Derek Wolfe Athletic Complex before it is open to the public.
Wolfe, a graduate of Beaver Local High School, played his college ball at Cincinnati before being drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2012. In 2016, Wolfe won Super Bowl 50 as part of the Broncos.
“We are thrilled to host Derek Wolfe and give our community the chance to interact with this former Beaver Local star who went on to become a mainstay on the defense of the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens. It is evident that he has inspired many in our area by the many jerseys you see on the backs of young people over the years,” said Eric Lowe, Superintendent of Beaver Local Schools. “This event is about celebrating the achievement, hard work and generosity of one of our own and will provide the opportunity for fans to interact with someone from our area who went on to achieve great things.”
Admission to the ticketed event is $30. All monies from the event go directly to scholarships for Beaver Local athletes.
Tickets can be purchased starting on Wednesday at Campbell Signs & Apparel,, the Upper Ohio Valley Museum and Learning Center at the Lou Holtz Hall of Fame, and the Beaver Local administrative offices.

Duran’s inside-the-park homer carries Red Sox
BOSTON (AP) — Jarren Duran hit an inside-the-park homer, Lucas Giolito pitched six effective innings and the Boston Red Sox beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 on Sunday to avert a three-game sweep.
In a tight race for one of three American League wild cards, the Red Sox won for the eighth time in 11 games.
Alexander Canario hit a solo homer over the Green Monster for Pittsburgh, which had won nine of 12.
Duran’s three-run homer into the Fenway Park triangle in right-center field capped a four-run fifth against starter Mitch Keller (6-13), pushing Boston ahead 4-1.
Coming off his best start of the season, when he went eight shutout innings last Tuesday in a victory over Baltimore, Giolito (10-2) gave up a run and three hits. He struck out six and walked five.
Aroldis Chapman got three outs for his 27th save.
Giolito breezed through the first three innings with the help of center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela, who made a diving catch. But the right-hander walked the bases loaded in the fourth before uncorking a wild pitch that gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead.
Roman Anthony had an RBI groundout for the Red Sox in the fifth. Rafaela drove in a run with an infield single in the sixth.
Pirates third baseman Cam Devanney, who grew up about 45 minutes away in Amherst, New Hampshire, made his major league debut and went 0 for 3 with a walk.
Key moment
Duran hit a line drive into right-center and the ball got past Canario, who tried to cut it off from right field. It rolled into the Fenway triangle, where it caromed off the side wall of Boston’s bullpen and briefly got past center fielder Oneil Cruz as the speedy Duran raced around the bases.
Key stat
Because of Nick Gonzales’ error at second base to start the Boston fifth, all four runs off Keller were unearned.

Cleveland trophy stolen
NEW YORK (AP) — Tennis player Sorana Cirstea said the trophy she received after winning a recent women’s tournament was stolen from her New York hotel room while she was playing in the U.S. Open.
Cirstea pleaded for the trophy’s return late Saturday night, two days after she was eliminated from singles play in Flushing Meadows.
“Whoever stole my Cleveland trophy from room 314 at The Fifty Sonesta please give it back!” Cirstea wrote on Instagram. “It has NO material value, just sentimental value. It would be (greatly) appreciated!”
Cirstea, a 35-year-old from Romania, won her third career singles title earlier this month in the Cleveland warmup tournament for the U.S. Open. She went on to lose to No. 11 seed Karolina Muchova in the second round in Flushing Meadows.
The hotel said it had no comment.
