Leetonia inducts five into HOF
LEETONIA — The 22nd class of the Leetonia Athletic Hall of Fame was inducted Aug. 30 at a breakfast held in their honor.
The class includes four athletes and one contributor:
Bob Cross, contributor
Bob graduated from Salem High School in 1983. He began volunteering at Leetonia in 1988 filming girls basketball games and the assumed responsibility of doing the scorebook. When Marcia Duko became athletic director, Bob began assisting with pregame setups for football games. As time passed, he was recruited to run the game clock. Bob has continued to run game clock for all sports at all levels. Bob is also announcer for basketball games. Bob’s dedication and attention to detail has allowed Leetonia sports to be conducted in an accurate, professional and efficient manner.
Tim Stecker,
Class of 1989
During high school Tim played football for four years. Tim was an outstanding player receiving many honors in his junior and senior years, incuding first-team Tri-County League, All-Columbiana County, Salem News All-Area, All-Northeast Ohio, and honorable mention All-Ohio. Tim played offense and defense. His senior year he was outstanding as a fullback. Tim lives in Leetonia and has two daughters — one plays lacrosse at Youngstown State and another plays volleyball for Florida.
Mike Mancuso,
Class of 1997
Mike was a three-sport athlete playing football, basketball, and baseball. Football honors include first-team team TCL, All-Columbiana County and Northeast Ohio and honorable mention All-Ohio. He set school records in football for single-season return yards (1,130), most combined yards (2,140) and tied returns for touchdown with four. He set school career records for most yards (2,198) and most returns for touchdowns (5). In basketball, Mike lead the team in steals and received honorable mention All-Ohio both his junior and senior year. In baseball, Mike set records for career batting average and was first-team TCL. Mike currently lives in Florida with his wife and children.
Jessica Durham,
Class of 2000
Jessica was a four-year letterman in volleyball, basketball and softball. In volleyball she holds school record for blocks in a season (129). In basketball, she averaged 16.5 point and 10.5 rebounds a game as a senior and was named first-team TCL. Jessica attended Ohio State University and received a degree in Art Education. She then received her master’s degree at University of Melbourne, Australia. Jessica has traveled extensively and now currently lives in Cincinnati and teaches art at Princeton High School.
Danny Simpson,
Class of 2003
Danny is a three-year letterman in basketball and four-year letterman in cross county and track and field. Danny excelled in track and was Leetonia’s first state cross country qualifier. In 2002, he was the TCL MVP winning the 800-meter and 1600-meter races, anchoring the 4×800 and was third in the 3200 meters. Danny holds school records in the 3200 (10:00), 1600 (4:36) and 800 (2:01). In cross country, Danny was TCL champion in 2001 and 2002 and county champion in 2002. Danny attended Heidelberg University. Danny has coached at Defiance College, Mount Union, Lake Forest College (Illinois) and Baldwin Wallace University. Danny is currently head cross country coach at his alma mater, Heidelberg University, and an assistant track and field coach.
